Bootstrapping the Verified Software Stack A research post estimates that 95% of nixpkgs' machine code could be formally verified for about $134M by the end of 2027, provided models improve at verification much faster than they improve overall. The post uses the nixpkgs bootstrapping chain as a blueprint, noting nixpkgs holds about 150 GB of machine code across more than 120,000 binaries, with just 9 MB of shared libraries covering two thirds of that code. The authors add that verifying each package's own runtime closure instead of sharing proofs would total 4.4 TB, 30 times the distinct machine code, and cost about $190B at today's rates rather than about $6.4B, citing global cybercrime damages of about $500B a year for comparison.
