# Bloomberg LP acquires Canoe Intelligence to enhance private markets data

The deal brings AI-powered document processing for over 44,000 private funds into Bloomberg's ecosystem, targeting a market worth up to $22 trillion

Bloomberg LP is buying Canoe Intelligence, the AI-driven platform that automates private markets data collection for institutional investors, wealth managers, and family offices. The acquisition, announced on July 29, puts Bloomberg squarely in the middle of one of finance’s fastest-growing and most opaque corners: private markets, where assets now range between an estimated $15 trillion and $22 trillion.

## What Canoe actually does

Founded in 2018 and headquartered in New York, Canoe uses AI to extract, organize, and deliver data from private markets documents. The platform processes roughly 1.5 million documents per month across more than 44,000 private funds. Its client base includes over 500 institutions collectively managing more than $11 trillion in assets.

The deal didn’t come out of nowhere. Bloomberg had already integrated Canoe’s technology into Bloomberg PORT Enterprise back on April 8, creating automated data flows for comprehensive portfolio analysis across public and private holdings. The acquisition essentially formalizes a relationship that was already generating value for both sides.

Bloomberg CEO Vlad Kliatchko framed the deal around the growing institutional appetite for private markets, noting that Canoe provides the data access and technology infrastructure that investors increasingly need.

## The money trail and backers

Canoe had raised approximately $72.8 million in total funding before the acquisition. Its most notable round was a $36 million Series C in July 2024, led by Goldman Sachs, which valued the company at $312 million. Other investors included Blackstone and Carlyle AlpInvest.

Bloomberg has also been building adjacent capabilities. The firm recently launched a private direct lending data service covering about 15,000 loans valued at nearly $1 trillion. Combined with Canoe’s document processing infrastructure, Bloomberg is assembling a comprehensive private markets data layer.
