BlackRock CEO Larry Fink urges urgent funding for AI boom

BlackRock CEO Larry Fink said the United States needs $500 billion immediately and trillions more to build AI infrastructure, warning that delays could widen wealth inequality. Speaking on a CNBC panel on August 10, Fink cited a need for over 70 gigawatts of power capacity at a cost of $50 billion to $60 billion per gigawatt. BlackRock's AI Infrastructure Partnership, launched in September 2024 with Microsoft, Nvidia, and MGX, has already committed up to $100 billion, including a $40 billion acquisition of Aligned Data Centers completed on July 21.

Fink says the US needs $500 billion immediately and trillions more to power AI infrastructure, warning that delays could widen wealth inequality

Larry Fink wants to talk about electricity. Specifically, the staggering amount of it that artificial intelligence demands, and the even more staggering bill that comes with building it out.

During a CNBC panel on August 10, the BlackRock CEO laid out numbers that make most corporate capital expenditure plans look like rounding errors: the United States needs more than 70 gigawatts of power capacity to support AI operations, at a cost of $50 billion to $60 billion per gigawatt. That translates to roughly $500 billion in immediate funding needs, with trillions more required in the years ahead.

The infrastructure arms race is already underway #

The firm’s AI Infrastructure Partnership, known as AIP, was launched in September 2024 alongside Microsoft, Nvidia, and Abu Dhabi’s MGX. The partnership’s mandate: funnel capital into AI data centers and the power infrastructure needed to keep them running. AIP set initial investment targets of up to $100 billion including debt financing.

On July 21, BlackRock’s Global Infrastructure Partners completed a $40 billion acquisition of Aligned Data Centers. That deal represents AIP’s most significant move to date, converting strategy decks into actual megawatts.

The panel where Fink made his remarks included discussions about a broader $500 billion AI infrastructure push, with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and other Wall Street heavyweights in the room.

Fink’s inequality warning #

The BlackRock CEO also struck a more cautious note about who actually benefits from this boom. In his 2026 annual Chairman’s Letter, Fink warned that AI could accelerate wealth concentration among large companies and institutional investors unless more individuals gain access to the economic upside through market participation.

Fink’s proposed solution is broadening market access, making it easier for ordinary investors to participate in infrastructure funds and alternative investments that were historically reserved for institutions.

What’s clear is that the capital requirements are real. The International Energy Agency and multiple grid operators have flagged data center power demand as one of the fastest-growing sources of electricity consumption globally.
