Bittensor Unveils Gamma Tokens to Let AI Subnets Pay Each Other

OpenTensor Foundation core contributor Const Steeves unveiled Gamma tokens at Bittensor's Exploit Summit on September 28, a credit system in which subnets burn a portion of their own Alpha token to mint Gamma priced against a stable oracle basket, with $5 of burned Alpha becoming 5 Gamma, so subnets can pay each other for inference, storage, and compute without TAO changing hands. Steeves named seven initial Gamma issuers — Chutes, Engy, GM, Lium, Targon, Hippius, and Affine — with the standard slated to go live in early 2027, according to CryptoBriefing and KuCoin research. The announcement lands as Bittensor grew from 32 active subnets in early 2025 to more than 129 by March 2026, generating roughly $43 million in AI compute revenue in the first quarter, and as Covenant AI, which operated the Templar and Basilica subnets, exited calling the network 'decentralization theatre.'

Bittensor just gave its AI subnets a currency of their own, a way to buy and sell compute from each other without touching TAO. The timing is awkward. The network is still explaining why one of its biggest subnet teams just walked out calling the whole thing "decentralization theatre."

Const Steeves, a core contributor at the OpenTensor Foundation, laid out the mechanics of Gamma tokens during a keynote at Bittensor's Exploit Summit on September 28, according to reporting from CryptoBriefing and KuCoin's research desk. The pitch: subnets burn a portion of their own Alpha token to mint Gamma, a credit priced against a stable oracle basket. As KuCoin put it, $5 of burned Alpha becomes 5 Gamma that doesn't fluctuate once minted. Spend it on inference, storage, or compute from another subnet, and that subnet redeems it. No TAO changes hands in the transaction itself. That's a real structural shift for a network that, until now, ran almost entirely on emissions. Miners and validators get paid in Alpha, which they typically sell into TAO. Subnets that needed outside services had two bad options: keep dumping their own Alpha on the open market, or go raise venture money. Gamma gives them a third path. A subnet running low on GPU capacity can now pay a compute subnet directly in credits instead of liquidating its token treasury to do it.

Steeves named seven subnets as the initial Gamma issuers: Chutes, Engy, GM, Lium, Targon, Hippius, and Affine. These are the infrastructure layer, the subnets that actually sell compute, inference, and storage to everyone else. Every other subnet on the network becomes, in effect, a customer. According to CryptoBriefing's account of the roadmap, the standard is slated to go live in early 2027, which means the September announcement was a design reveal, not a launch.

Bittensor has grown fast enough to make this kind of internal plumbing matter. The network expanded from 32 active subnets in early 2025 to more than 129 by March 2026. TAO Protocol reported that those subnets generated roughly $43 million in AI compute revenue across the first quarter of the year alone, covering real inference requests, training jobs, and data services rather than speculative token farming. A network that size needs an internal settlement layer: the same way any marketplace eventually needs its own currency once enough vendors start trading with each other instead of just with end customers.

Agent-to-agent payments on the XRP Ledger have surged past 3.99 million transactions through the x402 protocol, with RippleX projecting the network will blast through 10 million soon. Whether Gamma actually improves incentive alignment for validators and miners, or whether it just adds another token for speculators to trade, depends entirely on execution. The honest read is that it solves a coordination problem for subnet operators first. It's less obviously useful for the retail miners and validators doing the actual work, at least at launch, who still get paid in Alpha and still face the same emissions schedule they did before Gamma existed.

The governance fight that makes this a harder sell #

Here's the complication Bittensor can't design its way around with a new token. In April 2026, Covenant AI, which operated three of Bittensor's most prominent subnets, Templar, Basilica, and Grail, announced it was leaving the network entirely. Founder Sam Dare accused Steeves of suspending emissions to Covenant's subnets, stripping the team's moderation rights over its own community channels, deprecating its subnet infrastructure unilaterally, and timing large personal token sales to coincide with the dispute. Dare's phrase for all of it, reported by Cointelegraph, was "decentralization theatre."

Steeves denied the core claim. He told X, as reported by The Block, that he has no authority to suspend subnet emissions and that his token sales amounted to less than 1% of his total holdings, affected only through ordinary market mechanics. "I don't have any privilege beyond what normal TAO holders have," he wrote. TAO didn't wait for the dispute to resolve. The token fell 18% to 19% intraday on April 10, sliding from a daily high near $340 to roughly $264, according to Cointelegraph and multiple exchange trackers tracking the selloff in real time.

That's the backdrop Gamma now has to perform against. A system that asks subnet operators to trust each other's issued credits is only as good as the governance underneath it. Bittensor spent this spring fending off a very public accusation that its governance isn't distributed the way the marketing says it is. Steeves can build as elegant a credit system as he wants: if subnet teams don't trust the people running the foundation issuing the rules, they won't trust the credits either.

TAO has mostly recovered since the spring selloff, trading around $309 to $312 as of this week, down from its all-time high near $760 but well off the April lows. Whether Gamma becomes the infrastructure layer that turns Bittensor into something closer to a real economy is one question. Whether it just becomes another token investors speculate on while the underlying governance questions stay unresolved is the other. Neither will be clear until the standard actually ships in early 2027.
