The essay, titled “The turbulent AI era is here. The choices we make now are critical,” landed on Gates’ personal blog on August 26. At roughly 6,000 words, it reads less like a blog post and more like a policy manifesto from someone who clearly thinks the window for action is closing fast.

## From optimist to alarm bell

The 2026 version describes AI’s growth trajectory as “mind-blowing” and takes direct aim at technology firms he says are downplaying risks publicly while fretting about them privately. It’s the kind of candor that tends to make boardrooms uncomfortable, especially coming from a man whose foundation collaborates with many of those same AI companies.

Gates identifies three core threats. First, mass permanent job displacement across sectors ranging from customer service to manufacturing. Not the temporary friction economists usually hand-wave about, but structural unemployment that existing safety nets aren’t designed to handle. Companies that have built their growth narratives around scaling AI cheaply and quickly would need to factor in new costs.
