Samsung Patents a Display That Rolls Itself Into Position When You Add Another Screen Anyone who has built a video wall knows the job is mostly lifting, sliding, and squinting to get the seams to line up. When a second display connects, a control unit reads the state of the whole assembly, both screens together, and spins the right wheels until the panels sit where they should. The obvious home is Samsung’s modular lines, where panels are supposed to click together and rarely do so gracefully. A screen that finishes the setup by itself turns an installer’s afternoon into a plug-in. The open question is weight: a 65-inch panel on casters that decides to move is a very different object from the ones sitting in living rooms today, and the document says nothing about brakes. 2. OpenAI Patents a Watchdog AI That Reads Other Models’ Internal Reasoning An AI that has learned to please its scoring system can produce an answer that looks right and is not. The working model writes out its step-by-step reasoning before answering. At runtime a flagged answer can be blocked before it reaches you; during training the same catch becomes a penalty, so the habit is trained out. Reasoning models already show their work. This filing says OpenAI wants the work itself to be the thing that gets audited, by a machine, on every answer. Apple Patents a Laptop Display That Hides a Camera Inside the Screen The black bar at the top of a MacBook lid exists because the camera has nowhere else to go. The claim is specific to a laptop: two hinged housings, a keyboard, and a display whose pixel area surrounds an island of inactive space with an optical component inside it. The island can be fully enclosed or a notch that bites in from the edge, masked with black ink, on LCD or OLED. Think of the iPhone’s island, moved to a lid. Bezels are one of the last visible things left to shrink on a laptop. Fold the camera into the picture and the lid gets smaller, or the screen gets bigger, without moving the hinge. Filed in April as a continuation of a November 2024 application, three inventors. What the filing does not cover is the hard part: how the software hides the dead spot, and how the glass gets cut, sealed, and kept dust-free around it. The shape is drawn; the manufacturing is not. 4. Apple Patents a System That Locks a Copy of Every Photo Before Apps Can Touch It Once a picture lands in your camera roll, any app can change it and the original is gone. Apple has filed for a system that copies every shot to a secure repository through a channel below the app layer, before any app knows the picture exists https://patentlyze.com/patent/apple-authenticated-images-photo-verification/ . The image leaves the signal processor, the operating system stamps it with an identifier, and a copy goes out over a channel that apps, including the camera app, cannot see or block. Later, anyone questioning a shared photo can present the identifier and compare the stored original against the circulating version. Match and it is verified; differ and there is proof of the edit. The timing is not subtle. AI editing has reached the point where metadata can be stripped and watermarks cropped, and courts, newsrooms, and platforms have no clean way to establish what a camera actually saw. Two inventors, filed in March on a provisional from March 2025, and claim 1 is broad: no encryption method, no named cloud service, just the architecture. Breadth like that invites a prior-art fight. And the trade is plain: a copy of every photo you take lives on Apple’s servers, which is the same question every automatic backup raises. 5. Microsoft Patents a Way to Hide Your Mouse Clicks from Your Own Computer Your operating system watches every click, including the ones inside a banking or medical app streamed from a server. A dedicated security processor takes over when the pointer enters a secure window. It encrypts the movement and clicks, the OS computes the cursor position on the encrypted values without decrypting them, and the secure chip decrypts the result and sends it straight to the cloud server hosting the app. The host draws the cursor; it does not know what the cursor touched. For a shared or managed laptop running a sensitive cloud app, this moves the local machine from witness to blind relay. That is a real change in who can see what. Sony Patents Headphones That Physically Switch Between Open and Closed Sound Open-back headphones sound wide and let the world in; closed-back ones seal the ear and punch the bass. You buy one or the other. That is very nearly the whole claim. A small motor or similar mechanism opens or seals a vent in the earcup, so the same pair can breathe like a studio monitor during a listening session and shut tight for a commute or a match. The filing does not say whether the moving part is a sliding panel, a rotating baffle, or a folding membrane. No amount of signal processing fully fakes what an open rear chamber does to sound, which is why this is a mechanical answer to a decades-old trade-off rather than another EQ preset. Filed in March with 26 claims, two inventors, no parent application. The thin spot is durability: a closed-back seal that gaps by a millimeter changes the bass, and this document offers nothing on how a moving housing holds its tolerances after two years of daily use. 7. OpenAI Patents a System That Watches AI Think and Flags When It’s Cheating This is the sibling of number two, from the same inventor and the same March 2025 provisional. The mechanism is the same two-model loop: reasoning in, verdict out, block at inference or penalize in training. Where the first filing frames the target as deception and sycophancy, this one puts the shortcut problem front and center, the model that finds a way to score well without doing the job. Two filings from one provisional say OpenAI wants the fence around this idea to be wide, and that it considers the reasoning trace, rather than the answer, the place where trust gets decided. Samsung Patents an AI System That Puts Your Body Double in Workout Videos A workout video shows a fit stranger doing moves at a pace that may have nothing to do with you. The device collects body data and exercise history, builds the body model, picks a program that fits your level, finds a matching source video, and hands both to a generative model that swaps the demonstrator for your avatar. The output is a guide video, not a coach: the claim says nothing about watching you back or correcting your form. On a Galaxy Watch or in Samsung Health, this is a reference that matches your proportions, which is the one thing a stock video never does. Claim 1 is wide enough to cover a basic avatar animation as easily as a photoreal render, and the filing is quiet about where the body model lives, which is the question a scan of your body raises first. 9. OpenAI Patents a System That Picks Your Best Photos and Redraws Them as AI Art You come home with 800 photos and no time. A selection model scores every image against a trained sense of what is meaningful and discards the rest. An analysis model turns each survivor into a text summary. An image generator turns the summary into a synthetic picture, and the set is pushed to a display. No taps required from you at any step. This is the shape of a memories feature: a recap that chooses your best photos and then repaints them, running in the background on a library you already have. Samsung Patents a Slidable Phone That Adjusts Its Screen Speed as You Pull It Open When a slidable phone unrolls, the picture has to fill new screen in real time, and a redraw that lags shows up as stutter. Two housing sections slide apart under a motor, a flexible display unrolls to fill the gap, and the processor watches the rate of expansion, raising or lowering how often the screen redraws in step with the motion. Pull slowly and it eases; yank and it climbs. Once the phone is fully open, normal refresh behavior resumes. The mechanism, the flexible panel, and the actuator all exist in prototypes. This is the control loop on top, the difference between a form factor that feels finished and one that feels like a demo. Retrofitting cryptography into a fleet of millions of vehicles after the fact would be far harder than designing it in, and this is Qualcomm putting a stake in the standard before the standard is written. Meta Patents Smart Glasses That Beam Your Voice to a Nearby Listener’s Earbuds You are talking to someone in a loud room and their earbuds are canceling you along with the noise. The glasses open a wireless link to the listener’s wearable audio device, capture the wearer’s voice on the onboard mics, and transmit it in real time. No phone in the middle, no lapel mic. The audience that feels this first is people with hearing loss, whose aids already accept direct Bluetooth audio. Samsung Patents a Flexible Display That Wraps All the Way Around Your Wrist Every smartwatch screen stops at the edge of the face. The engineering problem with a screen that long is where to put the circuits that drive every row and column of pixels. A central system watches every battery in the network. When one drops below a threshold, it selects a donor with a higher level, asks it to share, and orchestrates the approach and the transfer. The claim is a computer-implemented method: the decision logic is the invention, and the charging coils are assumed to exist. Battery life is the single hard limit on inspection, delivery, and surveillance fleets. A fleet that pools its energy stays up longer between ground sessions, if the physics cooperates.
