# Bezos sells $4B in Amazon stock as company hits $3T valuation

Amazon's founder filed to offload 15 million shares just one day after the company joined the exclusive $3 trillion club

Amazon crossed the $3 trillion market capitalization threshold on August 3, making it the fifth company in history to reach that valuation. One day later, Jeff Bezos filed to sell approximately 15 million shares worth roughly $4.07 billion.

The stock surged as much as 5.3% intraday on the back of strong Q2 earnings, with Amazon Web Services demand riding the AI wave. Amazon now stands alongside Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Alphabet in that exclusive group.

## The sale and the optics

Bezos’s share sale was executed through a prearranged trading plan under SEC Rule 10b5-1, a pre-scheduled mechanism that lets corporate insiders sell stock without being accused of trading on inside information. The plan extends through February 2027.

The 15 million shares represent roughly 0.14% of Amazon’s total market value.

CNBC’s Jim Cramer noted the potential for negative sentiment surrounding the timing, given the stock was trading at record highs.

Bezos has been methodically monetizing his Amazon stake for years, funding everything from Blue Origin to his $10 billion Earth Fund. This latest tranche follows a well-established pattern of large-scale share liquidation.

## What got Amazon to $3 trillion

Amazon hit the $2 trillion mark in June 2024, meaning it added a trillion dollars in market value in roughly 25 months.

The catalyst was AWS, Amazon’s cloud computing division, which has become the company’s profit engine as enterprise AI adoption accelerates. Amazon is one of three hyperscalers alongside Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud positioned to collect those checks.

Amazon’s projected capital expenditures for 2026 sit at $220 billion, reflecting aggressive buildout of data centers and AI infrastructure.

The 5.3% intraday move was driven by Q2 results that showed AWS demand wasn’t just holding steady, it was accelerating.

## What this means for risk assets and crypto

The $220 billion capex projection is relevant for crypto miners and infrastructure plays. As hyperscalers compete for energy, cooling capacity, and semiconductor supply, the same bottlenecks affect proof-of-work mining operations and GPU-dependent blockchain projects. Rising demand from AI data centers has already driven up energy costs in key mining regions.
