Most people just haven't noticed yet.\n\nNot long ago, the conversation was simple:\n\n\"Which model is the smartest?\"\n\nToday, the biggest AI companies seem to be asking a different question:\n\n\"How do we make AI work together?\"\n\nLook at the direction the industry is taking.\n\nAnthropic is investing heavily in long-running workflows, delegated execution, coding agents, and agentic collaboration.\n\nOpenAI is expanding beyond chat with capabilities like Codex, Deep Research, memory, and increasingly sophisticated tool orchestration.\n\nGoogle is integrating Gemini more deeply into developer workflows, Workspace, and agentic experiences that can plan and execute complex tasks.\n\nDifferent companies.\n\nDifferent models.\n\nYet they're all converging toward a similar destination.\n\nThat doesn't feel accidental.\n\nAs developers, we're gradually spending less time asking:\n\n\"Which model should I use?\"\n\nand more time designing systems that answer questions like:\n\nWhich model should handle this task?\n\nWhat context should it receive?\n\nWhen should another model take over?\n\nWhich tools should be invoked?\n\nHow do we verify the output?\n\nHow do we recover when a step fails?\n\nHow do we preserve context across long-running workflows?\n\nThese are increasingly becoming engineering problems rather than prompting problems.\n\nThe intelligence of an AI system is no longer defined solely by the model.\n\nIt's increasingly emerging from how we orchestrate models, tools, memory, context, and workflows into a reliable system.\n\nThat's why I believe the next engineering differentiator won't simply be access to a more capable model.\n\nIt will be the AI Harness—the layer responsible for context management, routing, planning, orchestration, memory, verification, evaluation, observability, and resilience.\n\nIn other words, models become components.\n\nThe AI Harness becomes the system.\n\nWe've seen this pattern before.\n\nCloud computing eventually became accessible to everyone. The competitive advantage shifted away from simply having infrastructure toward designing reliable architectures, automation, observability, and scalable systems.\n\nAI feels like it's following a similar trajectory.\n\nModel capability will absolutely continue to matter.
