Bengaluru South Corpn deploys AI to identify road issues, survey to cover 75 km

Bengaluru South City Corporation (BSCC) has launched a pilot project using an AI-based vehicle inspection system to identify road issues such as potholes, footpath encroachments, garbage dumps, construction debris, dangling cables, and broken manholes, with the survey covering 75 km of roads. BSCC Commissioner KN Ramesh said the project could be scaled up if successful and could also be used for property tax revision and detecting building norm violations. The system logs each issue as a complaint ticket with GPS location and routes it to the respective ward's Assistant Executive Engineer for resolution.

Bengaluru: The Bengaluru South City Corporation (BSCC) will soon use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to identify problems on city roads..The civic body has launched a pilot project using an AI-based vehicle inspection system. Equipped with AI cameras and GPS devices, the vehicle captures videos and photographs while travelling on roads. The system analyses the visuals to identify and categorise issues such as potholes, footpath encroachments, garbage dumps, construction debris, dangling cables and broken manholes, and routes them to the officials concerned, the BSCC said..The pilot survey will cover 75 km of roads under the BSCC’s jurisdiction..Bengaluru Central Corporation chief inspects roads, streetlights, footpaths.BSCC Commissioner KN Ramesh said the project would be scaled up if the pilot delivers convincing results. It could also be used for property tax revision, detecting building norm violations and identifying the illegal use of basements.."Basements must strictly be used only for vehicle parking. However, these AI cameras will clearly capture instances where they have been illegally converted into commercial outlets. Alongside this, unauthorised shops, advertising boards, and Bescom poles encroaching upon pedestrian pathways will be identified and directed to the officials concerned for clearance,” the statement said..Each issue identified by the system is automatically logged as a ‘complaint ticket’ along with its GPS location and routed to the respective ward’s Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) and departments concerned..“After officials inspect the site and rectify the issue, they will close the ticket by up ‘before' and 'after’ photographs of the work,” Ramesh said..The project aims to enable citizen-friendly governance by proactively identifying and resolving civic issues instead of waiting for public complaints, he said.
