Bengaluru-based startup Dodo Payments has clarified its stance after it was accused of passing off AI-generated pictures as its new office. Dodo Payments founder Ayush Agarwal had yesterday shared pictures of what were supposedly the company’s new digs. “We moved into a new office in Indiranagar. 3x bigger than our last one. A year ago we went from a 9-seater to a 30-seater thinking we’d have room for a while. We didn’t. The team outgrew it fast enough that we had to split up,” he said on X. “Took two months to find the right space. Now everyone’s back under one roof. It’s not really about the office. It’s about what the office means,” he added. Agarwal shared four pictures from the new office. At first glance, the pictures looked like the typical startup office in Bengaluru — clean, minimalistic and stylish. But people who took a closer look at the pictures spotted something unusual. Several commentators said that the pictures looked AI-generated. The pointed, in particular, to the misshapen pens on the conference table, the odd lighting and shadows, and different fonts of the logo at different spots in the office. The images were clearly AI-generated, and Agarwal said as much the same day. “Seeing so many generated with AI comments – I did use AI to just sharpen / enhance the raw image but it seems like crab mentality never fades away,” he said on X. But that didn’t stop the post from getting over 10 million views. At this point, Agarwal stepped in shared a video with a tour of the Dodo Payments office. He stood in front of the spots where the pictures had been taken, and even tapped the logo for good measure to show that it was real. He also gave a tour of the desk areas, the conference rooms, and the common areas. “AI and image generation tools have really helped us to do things that were not possible before. That’s why we used AI. But we realized that moments like getting a new office, or an offsite, or a company badminton game shouldn’t be AI-enhanced or edited. That kind of misrepresents what the moment was about. All these images need to be real with real people having real memories right?” he says in the video. This is a fairly strange situation. Dodo Payments’ office was real, but the company chose to use AI-enhanced pictures of it to show it off to the world. AI use has become second nature to young people in tech, and the team likely didn’t think much of making their office look a little better than it was. But eagle-eyed internet users caught on to the AI use immediately, and forced the company to come clean. The company has now shown off a whole video of its office, and it does seem to be real (unless the video too is AI-generated in a bizarre twist), but the whole incident shows how AI can lead to some unexpected situations if not handled properly.
