# Beam 1.0 and Generating Functions

I decided to use **Beam 1.0** to generate **4 Rust functions** from specification files. These were fairly simple functions, and they already worked. But if I can have an LLM generate the functions from a spec directly, I can "delegate" and treat the AI-generated code as separate from the other code.

Beam 1.0 (from Reflection AI) is an **open-weight model** with 501 billion parameters. It can be downloaded and run on your local system—assuming you have 100 GB of RAM available for it. It generated my 4 functions **proficiently** and they all worked the first time I switched to using them.

The benefits mean:

• I can feel like those 4 functions have been "offloaded" and can focus my efforts elsewhere.

• I can just edit the specification Markdown files to re-generate the functions with Beam 1.0 (each generation cost less than $0.002, so it is affordable).

• Beam 1.0 fixed some issues with its new implementations.

• Eventually normal people may be able to run Beam models, as they are open-weights, so they can be relied upon like a hammer (or other tool) you own.
