AWS Workshop – Day 1, Session 2 Students at Coimbatore Institute of Technology completed the second session of a hands-on cloud-native systems and applied AI workshop led by Santhosh NC, a lead infrastructure consultant at Thoughtworks. The session covered EC2 instance connections via SSH and AWS CLI, IAM role creation, moving a Kaggle dataset from EC2 to S3, and building an event-driven serverless pipeline with AWS Lambda and S3 triggers monitored through CloudWatch Logs. AI & ML Date: 15 & 16 September 2026 Tuesday & Wednesday Speaker: Mr. Santhosh NC, Lead Infrastructure Consultant, Thoughtworks, Coimbatore Session 2 picked up right where we left off — going deeper into EC2, moving files between EC2 and S3, and then stepping into the world of serverless computing with AWS Lambda. Here's the full recap EC2: Connecting and Working with the Instance We continued exploring EC2 concepts and got hands-on with: Opening the EC2 directory through Git Bash Connecting to the EC2 instance using SSH Working with AWS CLI commands, including checking the AWS CLI version IAM Roles We learned what IAM Identity and Access Management roles are and why they matter for securely granting permissions to AWS resources. As a hands-on activity, we created our own IAM roles. Moving Data: Kaggle → EC2 → S3 To understand real-world data movement on AWS, we: Downloaded a Kaggle dataset directly into the EC2 instance Transferred the dataset from EC2 to S3 This gave us a practical feel for how data flows between compute and storage services on AWS. Serverless Computing with AWS Lambda Next, we were introduced to serverless computing and event-driven architecture using AWS Lambda: Created a Lambda function and understood how it runs code automatically without needing to provision or manage any servers Set up an S3 event trigger — so that whenever a file is uploaded to the S3 bucket, the Lambda function automatically gets triggered Monitoring with CloudWatch Logs Finally, we checked the latest trigger and execution details of our Lambda function using CloudWatch Logs, which helped us understand how to monitor and debug serverless workflows.
