But let’s go with the hypothetical. And suddenly what happens to the crown jewel the Oracle Database? Of course there would be something something special vehicle, but the software industry is fairly new - I don’t think we have had a major piece of software at the heart of every single enterprise just vanish (lots that got replaced but not just collapse?)\n\nAnd will that mean people say “quick move to SQL Server? Or will they say “how do we fund Postgres over the next 20 years?”\n\nIf Oracle can vanish (and not saying it will) how do governments and companies protect these basic utility services ? What happens if Apple stops offering updates in country X or Y?\n\nI’m just wondering how we get a grip on the strategic risks? OSS looks nice but the long term issues look rough\n\nJust ranting - any thoughts?\n\nComments URL: [https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48956641](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48956641)\n\nPoints: 1\n\n# Comments: 0", "url": "https://wpnews.pro/news/ask-hn-will-oracle-s-fall-from-grace-be-good-for-open-source", "canonical_source": "https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48956641", "published_at": "2026-07-18 10:06:05+00:00", "updated_at": "2026-07-18 10:21:10.759723+00:00", "lang": "en", "topics": ["artificial-intelligence", "ai-infrastructure"], "entities": ["Oracle", "OpenAI", "PostgreSQL", "SQL Server", "S&P 500"], "alternates": {"html": "https://wpnews.pro/news/ask-hn-will-oracle-s-fall-from-grace-be-good-for-open-source", "markdown": "https://wpnews.pro/news/ask-hn-will-oracle-s-fall-from-grace-be-good-for-open-source.md", "text": "https://wpnews.pro/news/ask-hn-will-oracle-s-fall-from-grace-be-good-for-open-source.txt", "jsonld": "https://wpnews.pro/news/ask-hn-will-oracle-s-fall-from-grace-be-good-for-open-source.jsonld"}}
