[1] The U.S. Army reinstated limits on its Ask Sage generative AI service after users depleted a centralized token pool within weeks, according to an internal notice sent to members of the Combat Capabilities Development Command, or DEVCOM.[1]
The notice said the Army CIO pool was exhausted by mid-June after leadership offered “unlimited tokens” in May. The Army subsequently renewed usage at current levels, although the message said continued central funding after October 1 was uncertain. In a post-publication statement, Army spokesperson Col. Marty Meiners attributed the drawdown to broad adoption and said leadership was actively managing enterprise token pools.[1]
The public contract record complicates the token count #
WIRED reported that the Army had access to 100 million tokens under an annual enterprise subscription and described the depleted pool as a year’s supply. Public vendor terms point to a different allowance: Ask Sage’s AWS Marketplace listing prices a 12-month enterprise package at $49,500 and includes 100 million inference tokens and 100 million training tokens each month. [3] A DEVCOM delivery order signed May 15 likewise lists a $49,500 annual “100M Enterprise Pack” running through May 14, 2027.

The immediate impact appears limited to usage controls rather than loss of service. Ask Sage powers the Army Enterprise Large Language Model Workspace, which is accredited for Controlled Unclassified Information and supports administrative work including acquisition documents and personnel-description updates. [2] The Army’s original rollout also anticipated finite central funding: its May 2025 announcement said CIO-provided tokens were limited and that individual organizations could purchase subscriptions through an Army contract vehicle with a five-year ordering period and a $49 million ceiling.
No new award tied specifically to the June depletion has been announced.
