Training an AI agent on a live production system is a bit like teaching someone to drive in rush-hour traffic. Technically possible, but the consequences of a mistake are unpleasant for everyone involved. Arga Labs thinks it has a better approach: build a perfect replica of the road and let the AI crash there instead.
The San Francisco-based startup has raised $10 million in a seed funding round led by General Catalyst, with Box Group, Emergence, Gradient, and SV Angel also participating. The company was previously backed by Y Combinator and counts Comma Capital and Scribble Ventures among its early supporters.
What Arga actually builds #
Arga’s core product is a platform that creates high-fidelity sandbox environments, essentially digital twins of third-party services that enterprises already depend on. Think Stripe for payments, Slack for communications, and the constellation of APIs that modern software teams wire together every day.
These replicas mirror the same APIs and behaviors as the real production systems. That means an AI agent running inside an Arga sandbox interacts with what feels like the genuine article, complete with realistic responses, latency characteristics, and edge cases. The difference is that nothing actually happens. No real payments get processed, no real messages get sent, and no real databases get corrupted.
For engineering teams deploying autonomous AI workflows, this solves a problem that traditional testing methodologies have struggled with for years. Unit tests and staging environments can catch bugs in individual components, but they rarely capture the messy, multi-step interactions that occur when an AI agent chains together calls across several services in sequence. Arga’s environments are designed to handle exactly that kind of complexity, providing full traces and latency data so developers can see precisely where things went sideways. The platform also sidesteps a practical headache: rate limits. When you’re training a reinforcement learning model that needs to make thousands of API calls per hour, hitting the rate limit on a real service is a showstopper. Sandboxed replicas don’t have that constraint.
The team behind it #
Arga was founded in 2025 by CEO Phillip Li, a former Amazon executive, and CTO Akira Tong, who previously worked at Stripe and Goldman Sachs. The team remains lean at roughly four to five employees, which makes a $10 million seed round look generous per capita, though not unusual for the current AI infrastructure funding climate.
The company targets mid-to-large engineering teams that are either building their own AI coding agents or deploying third-party autonomous workflows.
