Deadline*: July 20th, 2026, 23:59 Anywhere on Earth*

About the Fellowship

The PIBBSS Fellowship is designed for researchers from diverse fields (including math, philosophy, engineering, etc.) whose study bears on complex and intelligent behavior and are motivated to make AI safe and beneficial.

This is our first ‘winter’ cohort, and the first fellowship to take place in the Southern Hemisphere. Fellows will be based in Cape Town, South Africa, from November 2026 through February 2027.

During the program, fellows work on projects at the intersection of their field and AI safety, in close collaboration with a dedicated mentor. You'll join a cohort of ~20 researchers for a multi-day opening and closing retreat, a co-working space with regular speaker talks and community events, and a final symposium where fellows present their work.

The fellowship has been active since 2022, with our most recent iteration hosted in London in summer 2026. Over 73 alumni have gone on to roles in government, AI safety labs, academia, and independent research.

Financial support includes:

Who Should Apply

The fellowship is aimed at PhD and postdoctoral researchers, though we encourage anyone with comparable research experience to apply regardless of credentials. We accept applicants from all countries.

Relevant fields include (but are not limited to): mathematics, neuroscience and cognitive science, dynamical systems theory, physics, philosophy of science/mind/ethics, political and economic theory, ecology, evolutionary biology, linguistics, media studies, and the humanities more broadly.

You don't need a specific project in mind — we help match fellows with mentors and develop projects during the interview process.

See princint.ai/programs/fellowship for details on both.

Application Process

Stage 1: Written application — CV, personal statement (600–800 words), and optional work samples

Stages 2–4: Interview rounds to discuss research interests, develop a project proposal, and match with a mentor

Applications close July 20, 2026. Final decisions by mid-September, 2026.
