**August 25, 2026**, (Inside AI) — Apple today announced refreshed Mac Mini and Mac Studio desktops built around new 2-nanometer chips, with a clear pitch: run AI models locally, keep data on premises, and skip per-token cloud fees.

The Mac Mini jumps two chip generations, moving from M4 to M6. The Mac Studio gains M5 Max and M5 Ultra options. Both lines emphasize memory capacity and bandwidth as the deciding factors for on-device large language models.

Apple told **The Indian Express** that an M6 Mac Mini with up to **32GB** unified memory can run a "nice" local LLM. The M5 Pro variant with up to **64GB** and higher bandwidth sustains larger models. Both offer up to **4x** AI performance over their predecessors.

Pre-orders open today. Availability begins **September 22**.

## Memory Bandwidth Defines The Local AI Ceiling

The technical story here is not raw compute alone. It is memory bandwidth. The M6 Mac Mini delivers **170GB/s**. The M5 Ultra Mac Studio reaches **1.2TB/s** with up to **512GB** unified memory. That bandwidth dictates how large a model can run without spilling to slower storage.

Apple positions the Mac Mini as always-on "desk-side" compute. It sits beside a MacBook and handles automated or agentic tasks without active use. This targets developers running local inference, privacy-sensitive workflows, and small-scale AI automation.

The M6 chip includes a **12-core CPU**, **12-core GPU**, and dual **16-core Neural Engine**. Apple claims double the peak AI compute of M4, **40%** faster multi-threaded CPU, and **2x** graphics speed. Upgraders from an M1 Mac Mini see up to **20x** faster AI inference.

The M5 Pro Mac Mini adds **Thunderbolt 5**, **Wi-Fi 7**, **Bluetooth 6**, and **2.5Gb Ethernet**. Pricing starts at **Rs 99,900** for M6 and **Rs 2,09,900** for M5 Pro in India. Education pricing lowers those to **Rs 88,900** and **Rs 1,97,900**.

## Mac Studio Scales To Quad-Die And Clusters

The Mac Studio targets heavier workloads. The M5 Ultra uses a quad-die design with a **36-core CPU** and **80-core GPU**. Against the M3 Ultra, Apple claims **30%** faster CPU, **80%** faster graphics, and **4.5x** higher AI compute.

Four Mac Studios can link via Thunderbolt 5 into a cluster. Apple says this yields up to **3x** the performance of a single unit. That is a meaningful option for teams needing larger local inference without moving to data center hardware.

Mac Studio pricing starts at **Rs 2,79,900** for M5 Max and **Rs 6,29,900** for M5 Ultra. The **512GB** memory configuration arrives in late **October**. Education discounts apply across the line.

The enterprise question remains open. Apple's value proposition is clear: avoid per-token cloud costs and keep sensitive data in the room. Whether that outweighs the flexibility and scale of cloud AI platforms will determine adoption. The hardware is now in place. The use cases must follow.
