# Apple reveals first look at Siri overhaul and iOS 27 features

A leaked preview shows Apple transforming Siri from voice assistant into a full-blown AI chatbot, complete with third-party model support from Google and Anthropic.

Apple is preparing its biggest Siri overhaul in nearly 15 years as it looks to reset its AI strategy after a delayed rollout left it trailing rivals including OpenAI, Google and Samsung.

Bloomberg [reported](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2026-05-28/apple-ios-27-photos-screenshots-revamped-siri-pro-camera-app-new-ai-features) that Apple plans to unveil the redesigned Siri experience at its June 8 Worldwide Developers Conference, with the revamp expected to become the centerpiece of the company’s next iPhone, iPad and Mac software updates.

The new Siri is designed to work more like a full AI assistant than a voice command tool. Apple is rebuilding the assistant around a new model that uses Google Gemini technology, AI powered web search, deeper access to personal data and on screen content, and a redesigned interface built around the iPhone’s Dynamic Island.

## From voice assistant to AI chatbot

The new Siri will live inside the Dynamic Island as an always on agent that can help users complete tasks across the operating system and within apps.

Users will still be able to activate Siri by voice or by holding the iPhone’s power button, which will trigger a redesigned Siri animation in the Dynamic Island. Apple is also planning a new Search or Ask interface that opens when users swipe down from the top center of the iPhone screen.

That interface will let users launch apps, start messages, add calendar appointments, search notes, trigger app shortcuts, search the web, or ask questions using Apple’s AI powered search system. Results will appear in rich text cards that pop out of the Dynamic Island.

Users will also be able to swipe down further to open a chatbot style conversation inside a dedicated Siri app. The app will include a history of previous conversations, with chats displayed as either a list or a collection of cards summarizing past exchanges.

The conversation view will include voice mode, a text field, and an attachment picker for uploading documents and photos for context and analysis.

## The Extensions framework: letting competitors in the door

Apple is also testing ways to let users route Siri queries to third party AI services. The company already has a partnership with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and has internally tested integrations with Google Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude.

Bloomberg reported that users will be able to choose outside AI services directly from the Search or Ask interface through a drop down menu of external agents.

The move would mark a major shift for Apple, which has traditionally kept core iPhone features tightly controlled. Instead of making Siri rely only on Apple’s own AI models, the company appears to be preparing a system where outside AI services can handle some requests inside the Siri experience.

## What else is coming in iOS 27

Beyond Siri, Apple’s next operating systems are expected to focus on fixing bugs, refining last year’s Liquid Glass design changes, and adding new features across core apps.

The company is also planning AI created wallpapers, a systemwide grammar checker for text input, a revamped Image Playground app with improved AI generated images and Genmoji, and the ability to create custom passes in the Wallet app for events or memberships.

The Siri overhaul is expected to be released to consumers as early as September. Bloomberg noted that Apple is still testing multiple designs internally, meaning the final version shown at WWDC could differ from the current plans.
