# Apple cuts jobs in Siri and Vision Pro teams as strategic pivot accelerates

The layoffs span Siri, Vision Pro 3D video, and gaming divisions as Apple redirects resources toward AI-powered smart glasses under incoming CEO John Ternus

Apple has eliminated more than 200 positions across its Siri, Vision Pro, and gaming teams, marking the clearest signal yet that the company is reshaping its bets on spatial computing and voice AI. The cuts affect multiple groups that were once central to Apple’s next-generation product ambitions.

The reductions come just days before John Ternus officially takes over as CEO on September 1, 2026, succeeding Tim Cook. Ternus reportedly played a key role in the strategic shifts that triggered these layoffs.

## What happened and who got cut

At least 60 of the affected employees came from Apple’s VR development team, which was eliminated entirely. The broader 200-plus headcount reduction also hit teams working on Siri improvements, 3D video production for Vision Pro, and Apple’s gaming efforts.

A restructuring of Apple’s Vision Products Group had already been underway for more than a year, with staff being redistributed across the organization. The latest cuts are better understood as the final chapter of that reorganization rather than a sudden change of heart.

## Vision Pro’s rough two years

Apple launched the Vision Pro in early 2024 to genuine excitement and genuine sticker shock. The headset debuted at $3,499, positioning it as a premium product for developers and early adopters rather than a mass-market device.

Sales were weak enough that Apple scaled back both production and marketing. By mid-2026, the price had dropped to $3,699 in some markets.

Plans for a second-generation Vision Pro have reportedly been canceled. A rumored lower-cost variant, sometimes referred to as “Vision Air,” has also been shelved.

## The pivot: AI glasses over VR headsets

The answer, according to multiple reports, is AI-powered smart glasses and deeper Siri integration. Meta has found surprising traction with its Ray-Ban smart glasses, which are lightweight, socially acceptable to wear in public, and increasingly capable. Apple appears to be chasing a similar form factor.

Apple continues to invest in visionOS, its operating system for spatial applications, suggesting that software development will continue even as the hardware strategy shifts toward lighter wearables.
