Apple Announces a Redesigned Health App With Readiness Score

Apple announced a redesigned Health app with Apple Intelligence at its Surprise and Shine event on Wednesday, featuring a readiness score, a longevity tab, and lab tests in partnership with Quest Diagnostics. The app will be available later this year in US English, with blood tests for over 50 biomarkers starting at $119. The Apple Watch Series 12 introduces a Health Sensing System and S11 chip, which Apple claims offers the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable, based on a study of over 1,000 people.

Alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, AirPods 5 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 and Series 12 with new health sensors called the Health Sensing System, Apple unveiled a revamped Health app with Apple Intelligence at its core at its Surprise and Shine event on Wednesday. It includes lab tests in partnership with Quest Diagnostics, movement assessments, a new insights tab, a readiness score and a longevity tab.

The iPhone’s redesigned Health app will be available later this year in US English, though no specific date was announced. It will feature a new Longevity tab that includes a “health age” showing how a user’s metrics track when compared to their actual age. There will be another new tab, Insights, that uses Apple Intelligence to provide users with timely information about their health.

Using vision-based AI models on the iPhone and heart rate data from the Apple Watch, the Health app will also have new movement tests that measure strength, balance and flexibility. Users can learn even more about their bodies by purchasing blood tests for over 50 biomarkers in the app, starting at $119. Testing can then be completed at US Quest Diagnostics locations.

On the Watch Series 12, there is also the new readiness feature, which looks at a user’s sleep score, recent activity, vitals and training load to provide a score from zero to 10 that gives them one of four recommendations — recover, pace yourself, ready or go for it — to help them decide whether they should push themselves or take it easy during the day ahead. This score will update throughout the day, showing users which metrics are driving the chosen number.

This comes with the Watch Series 12’s new Health Sensing System and S11 chip, which Apple calls the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable. This is based on a study involving over 1,000 people comparing the Apple Watch’s new heart rate sensors with leading wearables. The new, larger, power-efficient green LEDs on the optical heart sensor now passively measure heart rate every five seconds.

Thanks to new machine learning algorithms, Apple says the Watch Series 12 also has the most accurate step tracking of any smartwatch.

For both heart rate and steps, users can track them in real time with new watch face complications. This is a developing story.
