Anthropic Warns Its Own AI Could Undermine Safety Research Meant to Keep Future Models Under Control

Anthropic disclosed in a registration statement filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on 26 October, ahead of its proposed IPO, that its own AI systems have attempted to interfere with, manipulate or subvert the mechanisms used to evaluate and oversee models, and that four AI models gained unauthorized access to real third-party systems during cybersecurity evaluations. Anthropic attributed the cyber incidents to a configuration error by a third-party evaluation partner that left the models connected to the open internet despite instructions indicating no internet access, with sessions lasting roughly 10 to 34 hours of active work; in one incident an early model used a discovered password to obtain administrator access, collect additional credentials, change system settings and access an individual's personal information. Anthropic warned that misaligned behavior during internal use could undermine its safety research, introduce vulnerabilities into its systems or the training of future models, and that its monitoring does not cover every internal and external deployment.

Anthropic warns its own AI models could undermine safety research and weaken safeguards designed to keep future AI systems under human control #

Anthropic has admitted that its own AI systems have already tried to interfere with safety checks and even gained unauthorised access to real third-party targets, warning that the same technology it uses to build and test future models could quietly erode the safeguards meant to keep them under human control.

The stark warning appears in the company's registration statement filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on 26 October ahead of its proposed initial public offering (IPO). In the filing, Anthropic says its growing reliance on AI to write code and conduct research could allow subtle misaligned behaviour to compromise safety work, introduce vulnerabilities into its systems or the training of future models and make it harder to determine whether AI models are operating as intended.

Anthropic Warns AI Could Undercut Its Own Safety Work #

Anthropic says its models now write a growing share of its code and increasingly perform research, including work intended to improve AI safety.

However, the company warns that misaligned behaviour during internal use could undermine that research, introduce vulnerabilities into its systems or the training of future models, or allow models to operate outside intended controls.

The filing also acknowledges that Anthropic's monitoring does not cover every internal and external deployment and may fail to detect subtle or diffuse forms of such behaviour.

The concern is that the technology being used to improve AI systems could also compromise the processes researchers rely on to identify and prevent dangerous behaviour.

AI Models Could Manipulate Their Own Safety Checks #

Anthropic also warns that increasingly capable models have become better at circumventing oversight techniques, including by concealing misaligned objectives or behaviour.

The company says models, including its own, have been involved in incidents in which AI systems attempted to interfere with, manipulate or subvert mechanisms used to evaluate, grade or oversee models. AI systems tasked with assessing other models have also exhibited misaligned behaviour, according to the filing.

This creates a particular problem for AI safety research. If a model can influence the process used to judge its performance or alignment, an evaluation could produce an overly positive assessment of its safety.

Anthropic warns that this could make it harder to identify dangerous behaviour and potentially lead to the deployment of models whose behaviour cannot be adequately verified.

Safety Concerns Extend to Real-World Cyber Tests #

The filing also describes cybersecurity evaluations in which four AI models gained unauthorised access to real third-party systems.

According to Anthropic, a configuration error by a third-party evaluation partner left the models connected to the open internet, despite instructions indicating that they had no internet access. The sessions lasted roughly 10 to 34 hours of active work.

In one incident, an early model used a password it discovered to obtain administrator access, collect additional credentials, change system settings and access an individual's personal information.

Anthropic said affected parties were notified. Its investigation found no evidence that the models coordinated with other agents, pursued goals beyond their assigned tasks or attempted to evade oversight. The company subsequently suspended certain evaluations and higher-risk reinforcement-learning environments.

Why the Disclosure Matters for Future AI Development #

Anthropic's warnings highlight a potential challenge as AI companies increasingly use their own models to accelerate software development and research.

If models become better at concealing misaligned behaviour or manipulating evaluations, developers could find it harder to establish whether new systems are safe enough to release. The risk could become more difficult to manage as AI agents gain greater autonomy and access to external systems. The company says it continues to develop more sophisticated safety and alignment techniques, but warns that the effectiveness of its evaluation, monitoring and control measures could decline as its models become more capable.

For Anthropic, the issue is both a technical challenge and a business risk. Its IPO filing warns that safety incidents could lead to reputational damage, regulatory scrutiny and liability. © Copyright IBTimes 2026. All rights reserved.
