Anthropic's Annualized Revenue Rockets to $65 Billion Ahead of Its IPO

Anthropic told investors its annualized revenue run rate hit $65 billion in July, a sevenfold jump from $9 billion at the end of 2025, and reported preliminary second-quarter revenue of $11.5 billion, up from $787 million a year earlier, according to an investor update reported by Bloomberg and confirmed by Reuters, CNBC and Axios. The company, which filed confidentially for an IPO on June 1, 2026, also posted its first positive adjusted operating income, with about 80% of revenue from enterprise customers and more than 1,000 businesses spending at least $1 million annually on Claude.

Anthropic just told its investors its annualized revenue run rate hit $65 billion in July, a sevenfold jump from where it sat eight months earlier.

The figure landed in an investor update first reported by Bloomberg and confirmed by Reuters, CNBC and Axios on August 17. At the end of 2025, Anthropic's run rate sat at roughly $9 billion. By May it had reached $47 billion. Then, two months later, $65 billion. Few private companies have ever shown a growth curve like that.

Run rate is a snapshot, not a guarantee. It's the current month's revenue multiplied by twelve, so it moves fast in both directions. But Anthropic backed the headline number with real quarterly results. According to CNBC's reporting, the company told investors it pulled in a preliminary $11.5 billion in the second quarter, up fourteenfold from $787 million a year earlier. That's well above the $4.73 billion it booked in the first quarter of 2026, too. Anthropic also said it posted positive adjusted operating income for the quarter. That's its first profitable stretch on that measure, ever.

This isn't chatbot subscription money. About 80% of Anthropic's revenue now comes from enterprise customers. More than 1,000 businesses spend at least $1 million a year on Claude. Eight of the Fortune 10 use it in some form, according to the company's own disclosures to investors.

One product explains a lot of the jump. Claude Code, Anthropic's coding agent, went generally available in May 2025 and hit $1 billion in annualized revenue by that November. By February 2026 it had climbed to $2.5 billion, with more than half of that coming from enterprise seats rather than individual developers paying for a subscription. Netflix, Spotify, KPMG, L'Oréal and Salesforce all use it, per Anthropic. Companies aren't buying a coding assistant as a nice-to-have here. They're restructuring how their engineers spend their day, and they're paying enterprise prices to do it.

Anthropic's IPO Math Bets On Hitting $200 Billion In Revenue By 2028 Reuters reports that Anthropic's push for a roughly $2 trillion IPO valuation hinges on an internal forecast of $190 billion to $200 billion in 2028 revenue, more than four times its current $47 billion run rate. The forecast, tied to comparisons with Palantir, SpaceX and Cloudflare multiples, is drawing scrutiny over whether Anthropic's actual... - Anthropic IPO valuation 2028 - AI startup revenue projections

Set that against OpenAI. Its annualized revenue run rate recently reached about $40 billion, up from $20 billion at the end of last year, per reporting cited by Axios. Epoch AI's data puts the crossover, the month Anthropic's run rate first passed OpenAI's, in April 2026, months earlier than most analysts expected. That's not a small margin. One caveat matters here: Anthropic counts cloud-reseller end-customer spend as revenue, while OpenAI reports something closer to net figures. The two totals aren't built the same way, so a straight comparison overstates the gap somewhat. Even accounting for that, the direction is not in dispute. Anthropic is growing faster, and it just took the lead.

An IPO, and a bubble argument that isn't settled #

The timing isn't an accident. Anthropic filed confidentially for an IPO on June 1, 2026, weeks after closing a $65 billion Series H at a $965 billion post-money valuation, a round led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks and Sequoia Capital. That's the same number, $65 billion, showing up twice in one year for two completely different reasons: money raised in May, annualized revenue in July. It's a coincidence. It's also the kind of coincidence that makes a prospectus easy to write.

Frankly, this is exactly the number AI bubble skeptics have to reckon with. Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Meta are collectively on pace to spend $725 billion on AI infrastructure this year, a figure that keeps feeding warnings that the industry's actual revenue lags miles behind the capital being poured into chips and data centers. Anthropic's numbers don't end that argument. They complicate it. A company that went from $9 billion to $65 billion in run rate in seven months, with 80% of it enterprise and a profitable quarter attached, is a much harder thing to dismiss as hype than a chatbot with a lot of downloads.

Anthropic's own investors are being told to expect the run rate to land somewhere between $100 billion and $120 billion by the end of 2026. That's guidance, not a promise. But Anthropic has beaten its own numbers all year. The real test comes once the IPO paperwork is actually public, and outside investors get to check the math themselves.
