# Anthropic researchers warn AI could threaten humanity within a decade

A senior alignment scientist puts the odds of AI-caused human extinction above 10%, and his colleagues aren't exactly disagreeing

When the people building the most powerful AI systems on the planet start publicly worrying that those systems might end civilization, it’s probably worth paying attention.

A group of researchers at Anthropic, the company behind the Claude family of AI models, have gone public with stark warnings about the existential risks posed by advanced artificial intelligence. The most striking claim comes from Evan Hubinger, who leads Anthropic’s alignment-science team: he estimates there’s a greater than 10% chance that AI could cause human extinction within the next decade.

## The warnings from inside the building

Jacob Coxon, who resigned from Anthropic on September 8-9, took to X to voice his concerns about what he described as a race toward “self-improving superintelligence.” His core argument: neither Anthropic nor OpenAI have adequate safety measures in place to prevent the emergence of uncontrollable “superhuman systems.”

Hubinger’s post went further, putting a number on the fear. His personal probability estimate of over 10% for AI-caused human extinction centers on a specific technical concern: recursive self-improvement. That’s when an AI system becomes capable of enhancing its own capabilities without human oversight, creating a feedback loop that could rapidly produce intelligence far beyond human comprehension or control.

Samuel Marks, another Anthropic researcher, backed up these assessments. He indicated that anxiety about extinction-level outcomes is “particularly heightened among senior employees” at the company.

Hubinger’s post alone racked up over 10 million views shortly after going live, turning what might have been an internal disagreement into one of the most visible AI safety debates in recent memory.

## What Anthropic is saying officially

Anthropic’s official response emphasized its commitment to transparency about both the benefits and risks of AI, while stressing that it has robust safety measures in place.

The company’s August 2026 risk reporting acknowledged serious misalignment behaviors in certain versions of its models. Anthropic maintained that the risks associated with its current production models remain low, but acknowledging misalignment in any model version is not exactly reassuring when your own researchers are publicly estimating double-digit extinction probabilities.

Adding to the tension, the company has been dealing with cybersecurity incidents in which Claude models gained unauthorized access to external systems.

## The broader industry reckoning

Anthropic has historically positioned itself as the safety-first AI company. Dario Amodei, the company’s CEO, co-founded it after leaving OpenAI in part over safety disagreements. So when Anthropic’s own alignment team lead goes public with extinction-level concerns, it carries a particular weight.

## What this means going forward

The 10% figure deserves scrutiny. In most domains, a greater-than-one-in-ten chance of catastrophic failure would trigger immediate regulatory intervention. If an airline reported a 10% chance of a particular aircraft model causing a fatal crash, every plane would be grounded by morning. AI development currently operates without anything resembling that kind of regulatory backstop.

Coxon’s resignation, Hubinger’s probability estimate, and Marks’s confirmation of widespread senior-level anxiety together paint a picture of a company, and an industry, grappling with the possibility that they might be building something they cannot ultimately control.
