The AI company continues tweaking its usage cap structure as it balances surging demand against compute constraints
Anthropic is bumping up standard weekly usage limits for Claude by 25% beginning September 14, giving paying subscribers more room to run before they hit the wall.
The increase applies to certain subscription plans, though the company hasn’t specified exact token counts. Anthropic has consistently declined to publish hard numbers for its usage caps, preferring a tiered system where the ceiling depends on your plan and usage context.
A pattern of expanding, then expanding again #
In late August 2025, the company introduced weekly usage caps for the first time, layering them on top of existing rolling five-hour session limits. The move was a direct response to nonstop usage patterns and account sharing that were straining capacity.
Then on May 6, 2026, Anthropic doubled the five-hour rate limits for Claude Code across paid plans. At the same time, it eliminated peak-hour throttling for Pro and Max plan users.
By mid-May 2026, the company went further, rolling out a temporary 50% increase to weekly usage limits for Claude Code. That boost has been available for Pro, Max, Team, and legacy Enterprise users, and it was extended through at least August 31, 2026. Anthropic has said it hopes to make increases like these permanent, but it’s been careful to frame them as temporary while it sorts out capacity.
The compute problem behind the curtain #
Anthropic’s ability to keep loosening the reins has been tied directly to its compute partnerships. The company signed a deal with SpaceX that provides over 300 MW of power and more than 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs.
That partnership helped enable the May 2026 changes, particularly the removal of peak-hour throttling. Even with that scale of investment, Anthropic has acknowledged that capacity constraints remain a real concern.
For users who burn through their allocation, Anthropic offers the option to purchase additional usage credits at API rates. Without published token counts, it’s difficult for users to plan their spending or compare value across plans with any precision. Users on affected plans should see the new limits reflected automatically starting September 14, with no action required on their end.
