Anthropic puts a permanent Claude in Slack

Anthropic launched Claude Tag, an always-on AI agent that joins Slack channels as a persistent team member, replacing its older Slack connector. The agent builds long-term memory of projects and decisions, and can be tagged to delegate tasks, with an optional ambient mode that proactively surfaces relevant information. The product is available to Claude Enterprise and Teams customers, and Anthropic reports that 65% of its own product team code is now written by Claude Tag.

Anthropic launched Claude Tag on Tuesday 23 June — an always-on AI agent that joins Slack channels as a long-lived team member, listens to what flows through them, and quietly builds a long-term memory of the people, projects and decisions inside.

The new product replaces Anthropic’s older Claude in Slack connector, which is being switched off on 3 August, and is rolling out now to Claude Enterprise and Claude Teams customers. Anthropic frames Tag as an evolution of Claude Code, its agentic coding tool: instead of opening a chat window to ask Claude a question, you tag @Claude in a channel and let it get on with the work, the way you would with a colleague.

65%of Anthropic’s own product team code is now written by Claude Tag, the company says.

What the agent actually does #

Anyone in a channel that has been granted access can tag @Claude to delegate. The agent will break the task into stages and execute them, pulling on whatever tools, data sources and codebases its administrator has allowed. Over time it builds a memory of the projects, naming conventions and prior decisions it has seen, so that people do not have to re-explain context every time they ask it something.

There is also an opt-in ambient mode: with the toggle on, the agent will monitor threads in its channels and proactively surface what it considers gaps, stalled discussions, or older conversations relevant to the current topic. Anthropic describes this as the agent keeping you updated about whatever it thinks you might need to know.

Admins control the blast radius. Each Claude can be scoped to specific channels, given access to a defined set of tools, and — crucially — spun up as a separate identity for a different job, such as a Claude for sales or a Claude for engineering, with memories that do not leak between them. A Claude sitting in a private channel cannot surface that channel’s content elsewhere.

A strategic shift, not just a feature #

The more interesting story is what Anthropic is saying about its own use of the product. According to the company, the new tool has changed how its staff work: we now spend much more of our time delegating tasks to many Claudes in parallel

— a sentence that, set against the company’s reported run-up to a public offering, reads more like a sales pitch aimed at enterprise buyers than a productivity boast.

This is the second time in a few weeks we have covered Anthropic reshaping Claude around agents — first the rollout of Fable 5 and its Cowork mode, and now a Slack-native, persistent teammate. The pitch is consistent: the model is no longer something you consult, it is something you delegate to, and the workspace is where the delegation happens.

The catches for a UK buyer #

Two practical points matter for anyone in Britain sizing this up.

First, eligibility. Tag is gated behind Claude Enterprise and Claude Teams, and Teams requires more than ten seats. That rules out the typical UK services firm with a handful of staff — the kind of reader we usually write for. The product is not aimed at you, and the credit figures that follow are not yours to spend.

Second, data. Tag runs on Anthropic’s servers, not on your own infrastructure. Slack is already a Salesforce cloud with its own residency story; adding a second cloud that watches the same channels and is allowed to build long-term memories from them is a data-governance decision, not just a tooling one. For a regulated buyer — legal, financial, healthcare — the scoping controls Anthropic advertises will need to be tested against your own data-handling policies.

What to watch #

You are not the buyer here, and there is no SME action to bolt on. The interest is what this tells you about where the field is going over the next 18 months:

The always-on agent is the new product shape. The shift from “ask the chatbot” to “delegate to the coworker” is no longer a thought experiment; Anthropic is shipping it for real money. Expect Microsoft, Google and the open-source agent frameworks to converge on the same model. The Slack and Teams platform war is now an agent war. Salesforce owns Slack and has its own agent play in Agentforce. Anthropic’s move is a direct insertion into Salesforce’s territory, and the data-residency implications for UK enterprise procurement will be fought over for the rest of the year.Metered pricing is the new battleground. The migration credits are a loss-leader. Once they expire on 1 September, real customers will find out what an always-on Claude actually costs at the metered rate. That number — whatever it turns out to be — will set the benchmark for every comparable product.

The practical move for a small UK team is the one we keep coming back to: build your own light agent stack on a model you control, where you can see the bill. The £50-a-month business assistant pattern holds up precisely because it has none of these moving parts.
