That puts Anthropic in the same public group as Google, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral, OpenAI, Cohere, and Synthesia. You should read that carefully. Signing the code means Anthropic has committed to a European framework for marking and detecting AI-generated or manipulated content. It doesn't, by itself, prove that every Claude output in every product now carries a detectable text watermark, and it doesn't give customers a public detector they can run against a paragraph pasted into a document. The useful fact is narrower, and frankly more important for builders: Europe has turned content provenance from a policy talking point into an operating requirement. The rule requires providers of AI systems that generate synthetic audio, image, video, or text content to mark outputs in a machine-readable format and make them detectable as artificially generated or manipulated, as far as the current state of the art allows. The code gives signatories a recognized way to show compliance across EU member states, rather than proving their own approach one regulator at a time. For a company like Anthropic, whose Claude models are sold through the Claude app, API access, and enterprise workflows, that predictability is worth having. The hard part is text. Images and audio already have better-known provenance tools. C2PA can attach signed metadata to media files, while Google's SynthID embeds invisible signals into generated images, audio, video, and text. OpenAI's help documentation says its generated images use both C2PA Content Credentials and SynthID watermarks. Google has also said SynthID is being adopted with partners including OpenAI, ElevenLabs, Kakao, NVIDIA, and Apple. Text is less forgiving. A watermark in prose usually works by nudging token choices during generation, then using a matching detector to look for that statistical pattern later. Google's SynthID Text documentation says the signal can survive cropping, a few changed words, and mild paraphrasing, but confidence can fall sharply after heavy rewriting or translation. That's not a small limitation. It's the whole fight. If you ask Claude to draft a customer email, then a person rewrites half of it, the final document may not behave like a clean model output anymore. If Claude only summarizes a human memo, a detector may find a trace without proving the whole memo was machine-written. If no signal appears, that still doesn't prove a person wrote it. Older output, unsupported models, and ordinary editing can all break that chain, and once it breaks there's no putting it back together. That's why enterprises shouldn't treat a watermark as courtroom evidence. It's one signal, nothing more. What builders can actually use If you're building on Claude, the practical job isn't glamorous: documentation. Know which model produced the output, when it ran, what human review happened, and where the final text went. Keep logs. Keep product labels clear. Don't sell AI-written copy as fully human work just because the detector question feels unsettled. That kind of shortcut now carries legal and trust risk. The same applies to platforms trying to filter AI spam. A machine-readable mark can help catch unedited model output at scale, especially the low-effort flood that fills comment sections, review pages, and fake local listings. It won't catch someone determined to hide the trail. A person can paraphrase it, a second model can rewrite it, a translation pass can muddy the signal, and a quick edit can wipe it out completely. Anyone telling you watermarking solves AI detection is selling certainty the technology doesn't have. Still, the direction is clear. Google has built SynthID into Gemini and its media tools. OpenAI has moved on image provenance. Anthropic has now put its name on the EU transparency code. The gap between policy and product is closing, even if the public tooling for Claude text remains less clear than the headline suggests. For startups, this is the part to take seriously. If your product pipes Claude output straight to users, you need a disclosure and provenance plan before a customer, regulator, or platform asks for one. The old answer, that AI text is just text once it leaves the chat window, is wearing out fast. Watermarking won't stop people from using Claude quietly. It will make careless use easier to challenge, especially when companies publish AI-generated material at scale and pretend nobody can tell where it came from.
