The conflict traces back to February 27, 2026, when President Trump directed federal agencies to immediately stop using Anthropic’s technology. That order triggered contract terminations, including a $200 million deal originally intended for various military applications.
The core dispute: Anthropic refused to grant access to its AI models for mass domestic surveillance and the development of fully autonomous weapons. CEO Dario Amodei offered a middle path, signaling willingness to adapt the company’s tools for lawful foreign intelligence operations. But he drew a hard line at surveillance of American citizens and weapons that operate without human oversight.
The Department of Defense, now officially rebranded as the Department of War, responded by classifying Anthropic as a “supply chain risk.” That designation restricts any contractor doing business with the government from engaging with the company.
