Anthropic asks court to restrict Reddit’s AI team from Claude’s trade secrets

Anthropic asked a San Francisco judge on Aug. 27 to bar Reddit in-house lawyers involved in AI strategy from accessing its most sensitive trade secrets about Claude, citing Reddit's plans to build foundational LLMs. The dispute, part of Reddit's lawsuit against Anthropic (case CGC-25-625892), centers on seven protective-order and ESI terms, with a hearing set for Sept. 10.

The ruling could determine whether AI companies facing training-data suits must expose model internals to lawyers who also advise a plaintiff's AI business.

Finding

Anthropic is asking a San Francisco judge to restrict which Reddit lawyers and experts can see its most sensitive model architecture, training data, and source code, citing Reddit's own plans to build foundational LLMs.

How we verified

Methods: documents, public records.

Anthropic's Aug. 27 opposition says seven protective-order and ESI terms remain disputed. It seeks restrictions on Reddit in-house counsel involved in AI strategy, a carveout for experts developing competing LLMs or tools that compromise LLMs, source-code-level protection for certain dataset identifiers, secure inspection of training data, printing limits, narrower TAR disclosure rules, and narrower preservation duties for legacy data. Reddit's Aug. 14 declaration says production was deferred until the orders are entered and that the parties reached impasse on Aug. 6.

Reviewed the Aug. 27, 2026 Anthropic opposition, Reddit's Aug. 14 declaration and exhibits, the parties' proposed protective-order and ESI language, meet-and-confer correspondence, Reddit's SEC filing, and Reddit's 2026 Staff Research Engineer job posting. Compared the competing provisions and reconstructed the negotiation timeline. Verified the case number, Sept. 10 hearing date, time, judge, and department from the filed documents. Party arguments are attributed as arguments, not treated as court findings.

Tested versions: N/A - court filings and public records.

Company response

Anthropic is asking a San Francisco judge to bar Reddit lawyers involved in AI strategy from seeing the most sensitive evidence about Claude's architecture, training and operation.

In an August 27th opposition filed in Reddit's lawsuit against Anthropic, Anthropic asked the court to adopt tighter rules for handling source code, training data and other electronically stored information. The companies agree that a protective order should govern discovery. They remain divided over seven provisions that determine who can inspect Anthropic's materials, what can leave a secure review environment and how each side must preserve and search its records.

The central dispute concerns information designated "Highly Confidential - Attorneys' Eyes Only." Anthropic wants to exclude any Reddit in-house lawyer who participates in decisions involving AI models, machine-learning systems, data acquisition, licensing, partnerships, product development or related strategy.

Anthropic's argument turns Reddit's AI plans into evidence against broader access. Anthropic says an attorney who advises Reddit on those commercial decisions could gain an advantage from seeing technical details about Claude, even without intentionally disclosing them. The proposed restriction would still allow other Reddit lawyers and outside counsel to inspect the material.

Reddit argues that the restriction is excessive. Reddit's proposed order omits Anthropic's competitive-decisionmaking test, and Reddit says the limitation could interfere with its ability to staff and litigate the case. Reddit also disputes that the two companies are direct competitors.

Judge Joseph M. Quinn, who handles discovery and law-and-motion proceedings in San Francisco Superior Court's Department 302, is scheduled to hear the dispute on September 10th.

Reddit's AI plans become evidence

Anthropic does not formally accuse Reddit of building a Claude competitor. Its filing argues that Reddit has enough commercial interest in models, training technology and AI products to create a risk when its lawyers inspect Anthropic's internal systems.

Reddit's own disclosures give Anthropic material for that claim. In its 2024 registration statement, Reddit described data licensing for machine learning and generative AI training as an emerging business opportunity. Reddit said its archive of human conversation could become important to organizations building analytics products and large language models.

A 2026 job listing went further. Reddit sought a staff research engineer for an initiative to build "Reddit-native foundational Large Language Models." The preserved listing described models intended for moderation, search, advertising and future user products, trained using Reddit's text, images, video and conversational structure.

That language is useful to Anthropic because the proposed restriction focuses on what a lawyer does inside Reddit, rather than whether Reddit currently sells a chatbot comparable to Claude. Under Anthropic's version, involvement in AI licensing or product strategy could be enough to lose access to the top confidentiality tier.

The order could therefore separate Reddit's litigation team from lawyers who understand the commercial value of its data most directly. Those lawyers may also be the people best equipped to assess Anthropic's training records and explain how alleged scraping affected Reddit's licensing business.

Seven rules before discovery opens

The remaining disputes extend beyond in-house counsel. Anthropic wants added scrutiny for academic experts whose current work involves building competing foundation models or developing methods to attack, poison or compromise them. Anthropic says the restriction would not automatically cover researchers working on AI policy, ethics or general natural-language processing.

The companies also disagree over whether dataset, crawler and file names may qualify for source-code-level protection. Anthropic argues that some names can reveal proprietary processing methods, including how training data is assembled or filtered. Reddit wants a stronger presumption that documents merely mentioning those names should remain outside the most restrictive review tier.

Training materials that cannot be hosted externally would be inspected in a controlled environment at Anthropic. Anthropic proposes allowing Reddit's reviewers to work there for 14 days before the parties negotiate limits on printed material. Reddit argues that restrictions on what can leave the room could slow its experts and lawyers as they reconstruct how Reddit content entered Claude's training pipeline.

Other disagreements cover technology-assisted document review, disclosures about search filters and the preservation of legacy systems. Anthropic says it will disclose tools used to exclude material from production, including custom tools, while reserving more flexibility for software used only to organize or prioritize review. It also opposes a blanket obligation to preserve inaccessible legacy data when the same information exists in an active system.

The procedural fight sits inside Reddit's broader allegation that Anthropic took valuable discussion data while refusing the licensing terms accepted by other AI companies. Reddit's June 2025 complaint alleges that Anthropic's bots accessed or attempted to access Reddit over 100,000 times after Anthropic said Reddit had been placed on its web-crawling block list. Anthropic has disputed Reddit's claims.

Anthropic previously moved the case into federal court, arguing that Reddit's state-law claims were preempted by copyright law. A federal judge sent the case back to state court in March, finding that Reddit had alleged additional contractual, technical and privacy-related elements.

A separate Anthropic effort to dismiss the complaint remained under submission following an August 12th hearing, where the judge expressed doubts about parts of Anthropic's position, according to Bloomberg Law.

If the case proceeds into discovery, Quinn's order will decide which Reddit lawyers and experts can inspect the evidence needed to test Reddit's allegations. Anthropic is trying to ensure that the lawsuit does not give people involved in Reddit's AI business a guided tour of Claude's technical core.
