# Anthropic allies are behind ‘independent’ groups ringing alarm bells about AI

A pair of organizations issuing warnings about the possible dangers of [artificial intelligence](https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/artificial-intelligence/) are backed by allies of the technology firm [Anthropic](https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/policy/technology/4719252/anthropic-alarm-ai-model-misuse-biological-weapon/) and its regulatory agenda.

The nonprofit groups Tarbell Center and Model Evaluation and Threat Research have emerged as key players in the public debate surrounding AI risks and potential policy, promoting AI-skeptical journalism and risk evaluations, respectively. The Tarbell Center has ties to Meta cofounder and [longtime](https://www.cnbc.com/2016/10/21/facebook-co-founder-dustin-moskovitz-tells-why-he-donated-20-million-to-defeat-donald-trump.html) pro-Democrat [donor](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/21/us/elections/harris-trump-campaign-finance.html#) Dustin Moskovitz and Skype cofounder Jaan Tallinn, while METR is connected to Moskovitz, Tallinn, and AI researcher Paul Christiano, a *Washington Examiner* review of public statements found. All three tech leaders played roles in Anthropic’s rise to success.
