Nvidia’s new DLSS 5 has leaked ahead of its official release, and one player has been using the AI enhancement tool to transform anime games into photorealistic nightmares.
Games that feature anime art styles aren’t exactly known for their realistic portrayals of people. Instead, they focus on creating colorful, eye-catching, and larger-than-life designs (cough) that help them stand out against games that opt for a more realistic design approach.
However, one gamer has been using Nvidia’s leaked DLSS 5 generative AI graphics tool to give beloved anime game characters a terrifying makeover, and it’s just as cursed as you could ever imagine.
DLSS 5 makes anime characters look cursed #
For those who don’t know, DLSS 5 uses generative AI to improve the appearance of in-game characters and environments. Everything from lighting, skin, hair, clothing, and textures is given a more realistic lick of paint. As you can imagine, this feature can have a pretty nightmarish effect on your favorite anime waifus and husbandos. An X user by the name of jo has been busy testing the feature, and they’re already begging people to take their computer away thanks to the uncanny valley results.
One example shows how DLSS 5 has ‘improved’ the art style of popular murder mystery game Danganronpa, with our boy Makoto Naegi looking more like the killer doll Chucky. His classmates also look absolutely terrifying, with the likes of best girl Junko looking the worst kind of paralysis demon. Hell, the school corridors of Hope’s Peak Academy also look like something straight out of the Backrooms.
Seemingly not put off by the onscreen monstrosities, jo worked some DLSS 5 voodoo magic on Ryukishi07’s popular horror visual novel Higurashi When They Cry. This psychological horror VN is unsettling at the best of times, but the photorealistic filter effect turns the game’s cutesy killer anime girls into images that need the strongest eye bleach.

Between getting jumpscared by Rena sporting realistic hair to Mion wielding a pair of sausage-like hands, I didn’t think Higurashi could get any more creepy, but man was I wrong. Even Trails and Shin Megami Tensei V weren’t spared from the AI filter experiments, with all of them adding to the cursed collection.
