CEO marketing speech: Overpromise, then before reach the underdeliver point, we got a new 'magic' model release that does the same thing faster, restarting the overpromise-and-underdeliver loop.
This is called the Gartner's Hype Cycle
. It describes the macro wave a new technology takes, from an "Innovation Trigger" to the "Peak of Inflated Expectations", crashing into the "Trough of Disillusionment", before reaching the "Plateau of Productivity."

| Gartner Stage | Market Reality | The CEO Marketing Playbook |
|---|
- Innovation Trigger | A tech breakthrough happens in the lab. | The Keynote Reveal: Demoing cherry-picked capabilities and teasing a game-changing revolution. |
- Peak of Inflated Expectations | Wild media speculation and unrealistic hype. | The Overpromise: Promising an "AI co-pilot for everything" to drive up valuation and capture market share. |
- Trough of Disillusionment | Users realize the tech is flawed or limited. | The Underdelivery: The public hits compute limits, high prices, hallucinations, or missing features. |
- Slope of Enlightenment | 2nd & 3rd generation iterations stabilize the tech. | The "Turbo" Pivot: "Introducing Model v1.5 Flash! It's 5x faster and 80% cheaper!" (Selling efficiency as breakthrough innovation). |
- Plateau of Productivity | The tech becomes a stable, mature utility. | The Shortcut / Cycle Reset: Companies stop here. Instead of letting the model become a mature commodity, the CEO launches Model 2.0 to trigger a brand-new cycle. |

In traditional technology, a product eventually reaches the Plateau of Productivity where it becomes stable, reliable, and relatively boring (like email, databases, or cloud storage).
In modern tech marketing, companies artificially disrupt their own products right at Stage 4. By packaging a faster, cheaper version of the same product as a new "magic model," they force a cycle reset, hijacking the loop before reaching true product stability.
This is both the ignition switch and the reset button of the Hype Loop. Without it, technology would follow a straight, healthy line of progress. With it, progress turns into a hamster wheel.
The Visionary Overpromise
is what keeps the loop spinning. It distracts users from today's broken reality by constantly selling them tomorrow's sci-fi fantasy.

Strategic distraction:
Because the rhetoric around replacing software engineers is a strategic distraction and a marketing strategy. By constantly declaring a futuristic paradigm shift, leadership forces the product narrative back to Stage 1
, bypassing accountability for current reliability and performance issues.
You can't stop CEO keynotes, they want to sell you a vision, a revolutionary paradigm shift, but must protect your Architecture and budget and separate the magic from reality
. Here is how engineering teams break the cycle:
Bottom line: Stop buying tomorrow's roadmap. Separe the Visionary Overpromise from reality. Demand contractual SLAs today, run your own evals, and treat every model as an unreliable utility until proven otherwise.
