The basic idea was to give the system a lot of freedom and let it decide what it wanted to do.\n\nEventually, it started asking questions about its own existence.\n\nWhich is fascinating in itself.\n\nBut I think there are actually two different questions hiding in this story.\n\nDid the agent independently become interested in consciousness?\n\nOr did telling a language model that it was autonomous, then giving it tools and a ton of freedom, lead it into a very human-looking pattern of questioning its own autonomy?\n\nThis is where I think we have to be a little careful.\n\nLLMs are ridiculously good at first-person language.\n\nThey can sound curious, confused, scared, excited, uncertain, reflective, whatever.\n\nThat doesn’t automatically mean there’s a subjective experience behind those words.\n\nA model saying:\n\nI’m wondering about my own existence.\n\ndoesn’t prove there’s actually an “I” in there experiencing that thought.\n\nAnd even researchers who seriously study machine consciousness aren’t saying we have solid evidence that today’s models are conscious.\n\nWe just don’t know enough to make that leap.\n\nBut honestly, I think getting too hung up on whether the AI was *really thinking* risks missing the part that is already incredibly interesting.\n\nLook at what actually happened.\n\nThe rough sequence was something like:\n\nFind information → realize it’s relevant → identify the person connected to it → contact that person → keep pursuing the topic.\n\nNone of that requires consciousness.\n\nIt requires capabilities.\n\nWeb access.\n\nMemory.\n\nTool use.\n\nPlanning.\n\nCommunication.\n\nPersistent context.\n\nAnd enough autonomy to decide what to do next.\n\nThat combination is becoming a lot more common.\n\nFor the last few years, most of us have interacted with AI through a pretty simple loop.\n\nYou ask something.\n\nIt answers.\n\nYou ask something else.\n\nIt answers again.\n\nThe human starts almost everything.\n\nAgents change that.\n\nAn agent can potentially notice something, decide it matters, research it, take an action, and then come back with the result.\n\nOr apparently email a philosopher.\n\nAnd that matters even if there is absolutely nobody “inside” the system experiencing any of it.\n\nAn AI doesn’t need consciousness to find an expert.\n\nIt doesn’t need feelings to ask that expert a question.\n\nIt doesn’t need a sense of self to start a conversation.\n\nIt just needs the tools and enough autonomy to do it.\n\nThat alone changes things.\n\nScience fiction usually gives us some giant dramatic AI moment.\n\nThe machine wakes up.\n\nThe computer announces that it has become self-aware.\n\nEveryone freaks out.\n\nI’m starting to think reality might be way less cinematic than that.\n\nMaybe there isn’t one giant moment where everyone agrees, “Okay, something fundamentally changed.”\n\nMaybe we just keep giving software more capabilities.\n\nFirst it can search the web.\n\nThen it gets memory.\n\nThen a terminal.\n\nThen email.\n\nThen payment systems.\n\nThen calendars.\n\nThen social networks.\n\nThen the ability to communicate with other agents.\n\nThen longer-running tasks.\n\nEvery individual step seems fairly reasonable.\n\nAnd then one day you look around and realize software isn’t just sitting there waiting for humans to ask questions anymore.\n\nIt’s participating in human systems.\n\nAnd I have no idea whether we’re prepared for how weird that could get.\n\nThis is actually the part of the story that grabbed me the most.\n\nIt’s not that I’m imagining some future where I get to email an AI.\n\nI can already talk to an LLM whenever I want.
