The relevant risks, appropriate uses, and useful conversation approaches for a seven-year-old learning to read are genuinely different from those for a seventeen-year-old preparing for post-secondary.

Elementary school (ages 5–10): Building the foundation #

Young children typically don't use AI tools directly and intentionally. But they encounter AI constantly. Voice assistants (Siri, Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa) are AI. Smart speakers in the home are AI. The recommendation system on YouTube Kids is AI. Educational apps that adapt to the child's pace are AI.

At this age, direct use of generative AI tools like ChatGPT is uncommon but not unheard of, especially in families where older siblings use them, or where devices are shared.

What to focus on at this age

Honest, simple explanations of what AI is. Young children don't need technical detail. They do benefit from understanding that the voice their smart speaker uses isn't a real person, that the computer "knows" what they like by watching what they choose, and that computers can get things wrong.

A useful framing for this age: "Computers can do a lot of clever things, but they don't actually think the way people do. They look at patterns and make guesses. Sometimes the guesses are right, and sometimes they're wrong."

Privacy as a simple rule. Children this age can learn basic privacy rules without needing to understand why in detail. "We don't tell Siri or the computer our address, our school name, or our full name" is a teachable rule.

Healthy skepticism about what they see and hear. Developmentally, young children are still learning to distinguish fantasy from reality. What AI looks like at this age

Middle schoolers are likely using AI tools: some knowingly, some not. They are using social media apps with AI-powered features (Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram). They may be using ChatGPT, Copilot, or similar tools for homework. They are almost certainly encountering AI-generated content in their feeds. Many are starting to use AI companion apps.

For Vancouver School Board students, Copilot 13+ becomes available at age 13 through their school account. Public AI tools have minimum ages of 13 in their terms of service. But these are not reliably enforced.2

Why this age is highest-risk

Several factors converge at this developmental stage:

Social stakes are highest. Peer relationships, belonging, and social status are particularly central concerns for early adolescents. This makes them more susceptible to peer pressure around technology use, more likely to participate in group dynamics involving potentially harmful content, and more likely to seek validation through social media.

Impulse control is still developing. The prefrontal cortex (responsible for judgment, planning, and impulse control) is not fully developed until the mid-twenties. Twelve and thirteen-year-olds are genuinely less able to anticipate consequences than adults. This is not a character failing; it is neuroscience.1

The specific risks peak here. The deepfake harms, sextortion patterns, and NCII situations covered in Post 9 and Post 14 disproportionately affect this age group.

They are savvy but not wise. Many middle schoolers are technically competent with AI tools. They know how to use them. What they often lack is the judgment to know when they shouldn't, and the life experience to understand why the stakes are real.

What to focus on at this age

Have the deepfake and NCII conversation now, before something happens. This conversation is hard. Have it anyway. The parent's guide and this blog have resources to help you. The point is that your child should hear from you about what these tools can be used for before they encounter it in their peer group.

Set clear, shared expectations about AI use at home and for school. This is the age to create a Family AI Agreement if you haven't already.

Understand what apps they're using. This doesn't mean surveillance. It means staying informed. Ask directly. "What apps are you using that use AI? What do you use them for?" Approach the conversation with genuine curiosity, not accusation.

Privacy, privacy, privacy. Middle schoolers are using their full identities online in ways younger children typically don't. Revisit the privacy conversation, including the checklist from Post 4.

High school (ages 15–18): Building independence #

What AI looks like at this age

High schoolers are likely using AI tools regularly and intentionally: for homework, for creative projects, for communication, for information. Many are sophisticated users who have been experimenting with these tools for years. They are approaching ages where AI tools are standard in post-secondary education and many workplaces.

What to focus on at this age

Shift from rules to principles. A seventeen-year-old who understands why sharing personal information with AI tools is risky is better protected than one who follows a rule they haven't internalized. At this age, conversations about AI should increasingly engage your child's own reasoning.

Academic integrity as a genuine conversation. The stakes of academic integrity are higher at this age. High school marks matter for post-secondary applications. But the more important conversation is about what learning is actually for. A student who uses AI to write essays they haven't thought through is not building the skills they'll need after high school.

Post-secondary and workplace expectations. Many universities now have explicit policies on AI use in submitted work. Some are strict; some are not. Some workplaces are beginning to expect AI fluency. Helping your child understand that these expectations vary (and that asking before submitting is always the right move) is useful preparation.

The privacy and consent conversation at this age becomes about their autonomy. Seventeen-year-olds have more privacy interests of their own. The conversation shifts from "here are the rules" to "here are the risks, and here is how you think through whether something is a good idea."

Sextortion and NCII are still relevant, and the social dynamics change. Dating and sexual development mean that the sextortion patterns from Post 9 are more directly applicable at this age than at younger ages. The resources at Take Back Your Images and Cybertip.ca remain relevant.

Watch for

  • Academic integrity issues in high-stakes assessment contexts
  • AI use replacing skill development in areas your child will need (writing, analysis, problem-solving)
  • Romantic relationships involving AI-generated content in any form

Across all ages: What stays constant #

A few things are true regardless of your child's age.

The conversation matters more than any rule. Children and teenagers who can talk to their parents about what they're doing online, without fearing blame or punishment, are better protected than those who feel they have to hide it. Building that relationship matters more than any specific policy.

You don't have to be an expert. "I don't know, let's find out together" is a legitimate and effective response at any age. Modelling curiosity and honest engagement with uncertainty is more valuable than pretending certainty you don't have.

The risks are real but not inevitable. Most children will not be seriously harmed by AI. The goal is not to generate fear but to build a foundation of knowledge, conversation, and shared values that reduces the risk when things do go sideways.

  • Elementary (5–10): Build foundational concepts. AI makes guesses, not decisions; what's private stays private; what you see online might not be real.
