The new tool lets theft victims and small law enforcement agencies trace stolen crypto without specialized forensic expertise
Tracking stolen crypto used to require either deep technical expertise or a fat budget to hire someone who has it. AMLBot is betting that neither should be necessary.
The crypto compliance firm, which has been operating since 2019, launched AI Tracer in beta on March 27. It’s a self-service platform that lets anyone, from individual theft victims to under-resourced police departments, trace stolen digital assets by plugging in a transaction hash, the relevant blockchain, and the asset type. The AI handles the rest, mapping fund flows across wallets and exchanges, then spitting out a visual graph and a downloadable report suitable for police filings or compliance submissions.
Why speed matters more than you think #
Here’s the thing about crypto theft: the clock starts ticking the moment funds leave your wallet, and the attacker has a massive head start. According to AMLBot, the average assailant gains roughly 20 hours before any meaningful investigation begins. The fastest laundering operations can move stolen funds in under 3 minutes.
AI Tracer is designed to compress that response window. A victim inputs their transaction details, and the platform generates its fund-flow analysis without requiring them to understand blockchain architecture or forensic methodology.
The tool supports major blockchains at launch, including Tron, Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, and Bitcoin. AMLBot says it can also handle visible cross-chain movements across more than 14 different networks, which matters because sophisticated thieves rarely keep stolen funds on a single chain.
What the tool does, and what it doesn’t #
An important distinction: AI Tracer does not recover stolen funds. It traces them. The platform generates evidence, not outcomes.
That evidence, though, is specifically formatted to be actionable. The visual graphs and audit-ready reports are designed for submission to law enforcement agencies and cryptocurrency exchanges, which can then freeze accounts or initiate recovery procedures. If users need to escalate beyond what the self-service tool provides, AMLBot offers its existing full-service recovery operations, which the company says have success rates between 60% and 75% depending on how quickly victims act.
AMLBot claims to have conducted over 5,000 full investigations to date. AI Tracer essentially productizes the initial phase of that workflow, turning what was previously a consulting engagement into a software product.
The competitive landscape is heating up #
AMLBot is stepping into a market dominated by well-funded incumbents. Chainalysis and Elliptic have long been the go-to names in blockchain analytics, serving governments, exchanges, and institutional clients with comprehensive investigation platforms. But those tools are built for professionals, not for someone who just got phished out of their life savings.
The self-service angle is where AMLBot is trying to carve out differentiation. By lowering the expertise barrier, AI Tracer targets a segment of the market that established players have largely ignored: individuals and small organizations that can’t justify enterprise software contracts but desperately need forensic capabilities.
