The tech giant's stake in the AI safety company has grown roughly 14x on paper, with implications rippling across cloud computing, crypto infrastructure, and the broader market.
Amazon poured roughly $13 billion into Anthropic. That stake is now worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $190 billion.
The investment, which started with an $8 billion initial commitment and grew by another $5 billion announced in April 2026, has ballooned as Anthropic’s valuation surged to $965 billion following its Series H funding round in May 2026.
How the numbers stack up #
As of March 31, 2026, Amazon’s stake in Anthropic was valued at approximately $74 billion. Fast forward just a couple months, and secondary market trading plus expectations around Anthropic’s forthcoming IPO have pushed that estimate to between $180 billion and $240 billion.
There’s more money on the table, too. Amazon has the option to deploy up to an additional $20 billion into Anthropic, contingent on performance milestones.
Anthropic has committed to spending over $100 billion on AWS cloud services over the next decade. Amazon isn’t just profiting from the equity appreciation. It’s also locking in a massive, long-term customer for its most important business unit.
Why crypto builders should be paying attention #
AWS is already the backbone for a significant chunk of crypto infrastructure. Ethereum nodes, DeFi protocols, NFT marketplaces, and blockchain analytics platforms all run on Amazon’s cloud.
Anthropic’s deep integration with AWS means the platform is likely to see accelerated deployment of AI-driven tools, including fraud detection for on-chain transactions, smarter smart contract auditing, and more sophisticated risk modeling for DeFi lending protocols.
Microsoft has its deep partnership with OpenAI. Google has been building Gemini in-house. Amazon holds a stake that’s appreciating at a pace that funds continued infrastructure investment, creating a three-way arms race where the collateral beneficiaries include every developer building on these cloud platforms.
What this means for investors #
For Amazon shareholders, a $13 billion outlay generating roughly 14x paper returns creates enormous optionality. The risk is concentration. If a growing share of crypto infrastructure depends on AWS, and AWS becomes increasingly intertwined with a single AI company’s technology stack, that creates a centralization vector. Decentralization purists will note the irony of building permissionless systems on top of a single corporation’s servers.
The Anthropic IPO, whenever it materializes, will be the next major catalyst. A public listing would crystallize Amazon’s paper gains into something the market can properly price.
