The e-commerce giant cited privacy concerns and unauthorized access after Meta reportedly failed to give advance notice about its new AI shopping assistant.
Amazon started blocking Meta’s Muse AI agent from making purchases on its platform on the night of September 20, effectively cutting off one of the new assistant’s headline features just twelve days after launch.
Users trying to shop Amazon through Muse now see a popup warning that “continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed.”
What happened and why Amazon pulled the plug #
According to reporting from GeekWire, Meta never told Amazon that Muse would be accessing its storefront on behalf of users.
Amazon raised two specific concerns beyond the lack of notice. First, Muse reportedly doesn’t identify itself as an automated agent when it browses Amazon. Second, Amazon flagged what it described as the AI agent “seemingly capturing customer credentials,” raising questions about how login information is handled when a third-party bot is doing the shopping.
An Amazon spokesperson emphasized that third-party applications making purchases on behalf of customers should respect merchants’ policies and decisions about their platforms.

Meta, for its part, has touted Muse’s security architecture. The agent reportedly uses a dedicated secure virtual machine and requires explicit user approval before executing high-risk actions like purchases. It also implements one-time virtual cards for payments, a design choice meant to limit exposure if something goes wrong.
What is Muse, and why does it matter #
Muse launched on September 8 in the US across iOS, Android, and web integrations including WhatsApp. Meta positioned it as a personal AI agent capable of handling multi-step tasks, with online shopping as one of its core use cases. The service runs on two subscription tiers: $20 per month for standard use and $100 per month for heavy users.
Losing Amazon access is a significant blow to that value proposition. Amazon commands roughly 40% of US e-commerce, so an AI shopping assistant that can’t shop Amazon is like a GPS that doesn’t cover highways.
The two companies have confirmed that discussions are ongoing. Amazon has not commented on whether it’s considering legal action.
Amazon’s pattern of blocking AI agents #
This isn’t Amazon’s first time shutting the door on an outside AI agent. The company has a track record of restricting automated access from other companies’ tools, maintaining tight control over how its platform gets used by third-party software.
