Amazon announced it will shut down Mechanical Turk, its crowdsourcing marketplace that CEO Jeff Bezos once called 'artificial artificial intelligence,' on Sept. 30, according to a CNBC report. The service, launched in 2005, allowed businesses to hire remote workers for tasks computers could not easily perform, and its closure marks the end of a pioneering platform in the gig economy and AI training data industry. The exact number of workers affected was not disclosed in the report.
