# Amazon AI executive says useful quantum computing is decades away

Peter DeSantis's sobering timeline clashes with Google's bullish five-year forecast, highlighting a growing rift in how Big Tech frames the quantum future.

Peter DeSantis, Amazon’s SVP of AI, Silicon Development, and Quantum Computing, has a message for anyone expecting quantum computers to transform industries anytime soon: slow down. The executive says fault-tolerant quantum systems, the kind that could actually solve meaningful problems, remain many years and possibly decades from becoming reality.

## The timeline gap between Big Tech players is widening

Not everyone in Silicon Valley agrees on when quantum computing will matter. Google has projected practical quantum applications arriving in roughly five years. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has offered a range of 15 to 30 years for what he calls “very useful” quantum systems. And now DeSantis is essentially siding with the cautious camp, suggesting the technology needs decades of additional work before it delivers on its grand promises.

Oskar Painter, another key figure in Amazon’s quantum program, has echoed a similar view. He estimates that commercial quantum workloads are likely more than 10 years away. That’s a notably restrained position for a company that has invested heavily in the space since launching the AWS Center for Quantum Computing around 2019-2020.

## Amazon’s Ocelot chip: progress, not a miracle

On February 25, 2025, Amazon announced Ocelot, a quantum chip designed to reduce error-correction overhead costs by up to 90%. Amazon has suggested Ocelot could shorten the path to usable quantum computing by as much as five years.

The company has also entered into collaborations with QuEra, a quantum startup, with the goal of developing fault-tolerant quantum systems for deployment around 2028.

## Why this matters for the quantum investment thesis

Quantum computing stocks have had a volatile run. Companies like IonQ, Rigetti Computing, and D-Wave have seen their valuations swing wildly based on headlines about technical milestones. When a senior executive at one of the world’s largest cloud providers says the destination is decades away, it introduces a meaningful counterweight to the hype cycle.

Google’s more aggressive five-year outlook has helped sustain bullish sentiment in quantum-related equities. If Amazon, a company with a dedicated quantum research team dating back roughly five years, is telling the market to be patient, that signal carries weight.

Amazon’s Ocelot chip and its collaboration with QuEra targeting 2028 represent tangible waypoints. Whether those waypoints lead to a five-year acceleration or merely confirm the decades-long timeline will tell investors far more than any executive’s prediction.
