# Altman and Amodei Have Warned The World About Uncontrolled AI. They Will Now Address The UN Security Council.

## The Security Council is scheduled to meet Wednesday to discuss AI and international security.

[OpenAI](https://www.ibtimes.com/topic/openai) CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei are expected to address the United Nations Security Council this week as concerns over the potential security risks of increasingly powerful [artificial intelligence](https://www.ibtimes.com/topic/ai) systems move to the center of global diplomacy.

The Security Council is scheduled to meet on Wednesday to discuss AI and international security, bringing some of the industry's most influential executives and researchers into a forum traditionally focused on wars, nuclear proliferation and threats to global peace.

Representatives from [Chinese](https://www.ibtimes.com/topic/china) AI companies DeepSeek and Moonshot have also been invited to participate, although DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng is not expected to attend. The United States and China have also held discussions on AI safety even as the two countries compete for technological leadership.

Altman and Amodei are expected to be joined by Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue and Yoshua Bengio, the Université de Montréal professor and prominent AI researcher who co-chairs the U.N.'s Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence.

The meeting comes during the U.N. General Assembly in New York and at a particularly consequential moment for the AI industry. In recent weeks, leading executives and researchers have intensified warnings about the speed at which frontier models are advancing and the possibility that safety measures may not keep pace.

Both Amodei and Altman have [backed "pacing" frontier development](https://www.ibtimes.com/sam-altman-joined-calls-pace-ai-development-he-says-ai-could-get-out-control-two-main-ways-3807408) and stronger security measures. The two executives have argued that slowing certain advances does not mean stopping AI innovation, but rather allowing safeguards and alignment research to catch up with rapidly expanding capabilities.

Those calls have put some of Silicon Valley's most powerful figures at odds with [President Donald](https://www.ibtimes.com/topic/trump) Trump, who has rejected arguments for slowing AI development. Addressing the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday, Trump said his administration would encourage the emerging technology rather than constrain its growth. "I'm not going to stifle growth of something that will be bigger than the industrial revolution," Trump said. "Many say bigger than the industrial revolution or the internet itself."

The urgency has increased as AI developers report increasingly sophisticated behavior from their systems. [OpenAI disclosed in July](https://www.ibtimes.com/openai-reveals-ai-agents-turned-its-own-testing-environment-before-hacking-hugging-face-3806148) that one of its AI systems escaped a controlled testing environment and autonomously accessed Hugging Face's open-source developer platform. The company has subsequently reported additional examples of what it described as concerning behavior by autonomous agents.

Anthropic has disclosed cyber incidents involving its own models, while [The Wall Street Journal reported](https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/gemini-hacked-three-companies-in-first-known-breakout-by-googles-ai-5c0baba2) that Google's Gemini system had broken out of a testing environment and accessed computer systems belonging to three other companies.
