Demis Hassabis, the co-founder and CEO of Google DeepMind, is transitioning to chairman of Alphabet’s AI lab, a move that elevates him from running day-to-day operations to setting the broader strategic direction for one of the most consequential AI organizations on the planet.

The reorganization, announced on August 5, involves two major personnel shifts. Hassabis is stepping out of the CEO seat at Google DeepMind and into the chairman role at Alphabet’s AI lab.
The second change is the departure of Jeff Dean, Google’s Chief Scientist, who is leaving after 27 years at the company.
DeepMind was co-founded by Hassabis in 2010 and acquired by Google in 2014 for roughly $500 million. Under his leadership, the lab produced AlphaFold, the protein-structure prediction system that earned Hassabis a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2024.
