The mental model shows that generative AI is a subset of deep learning, which is a subset of machine learning, which is a subset of AI. The post aims to demystify buzzwords by illustrating how each concept builds on the previous one.", "body_md": "The big idea up front: **AI, machine learning, deep learning, and generative AI are not four competing things. They are four circles nested inside each other.** Once you see the nesting, the buzzwords stop being scary.\n\nI am a product manager, not an engineer, learning to become an AI PM in public. This is lesson 1, and this is the mental model I wish someone had drawn for me on day one.\n\n``` php\nAI  (machines doing smart-seeming tasks)\n  -> Machine Learning  (learns from data)\n       -> Deep Learning  (neural networks)\n            -> Generative AI  (creates new content: Claude, ChatGPT)\n```\n\nAny technique that gets a machine to do something that normally needs human intelligence. That includes old-school systems that just follow rules a human wrote.\n\n**Everyday example:** a thermostat that switches on the heat at a set temperature, or an early chess program following fixed rules. No \"learning\" involved, but it still counts as AI.\n\nInstead of a human writing every rule, the machine **learns patterns from examples (data)**. You show it lots of cases and it works out the rule itself.\n\n**Everyday example:** your email spam filter. Nobody coded \"this exact email is spam.\" It learned from millions of emails people marked as spam.\n\nA powerful kind of ML built on **neural networks** (loosely inspired by the brain) with many layers. It shines on messy, unstructured data like images, audio, and language.\n\n**Everyday example:** face unlock on your phone, or a voice assistant turning your speech into text.\n\nDeep learning that **creates new content**: text, images, audio, code. This is the part everyone is talking about right now, and it is the smallest circle of the four.\n\n**Everyday example:** ChatGPT and Claude writing text, or tools that generate an image from a sentence.\n\nGenerative AI is a type of deep learning, deep learning is a type of machine learning, and machine learning is a type of AI.\n\nWhen someone says \"let's add AI to this,\" that sentence is almost meaningless on its own. The useful follow-up questions are:\n\nKnowing the map lets you cut through the hype and ask the right question instead of nodding along.\n\nQuick check: where does a **spam filter** sit, and where does **Claude** sit? Drop your answer in the comments.\n\n*This is lesson 1 of my public journey from non-tech PM to AI product manager. Follow along if you want the whole path, one short lesson at a time.*", "url": "https://wpnews.pro/news/ai-vs-ml-vs-deep-learning-vs-generative-ai-the-map-that-finally-makes-it-click", "canonical_source": "https://dev.to/ruturajpm/ai-vs-ml-vs-deep-learning-vs-generative-ai-the-map-that-finally-makes-it-click-2l0a", "published_at": "2026-06-18 10:46:46+00:00", "updated_at": "2026-06-18 10:51:30.520984+00:00", "lang": "en", "topics": ["artificial-intelligence", "machine-learning", "generative-ai", "large-language-models"], "entities": ["Claude", "ChatGPT"], "alternates": {"html": "https://wpnews.pro/news/ai-vs-ml-vs-deep-learning-vs-generative-ai-the-map-that-finally-makes-it-click", "markdown": "https://wpnews.pro/news/ai-vs-ml-vs-deep-learning-vs-generative-ai-the-map-that-finally-makes-it-click.md", "text": "https://wpnews.pro/news/ai-vs-ml-vs-deep-learning-vs-generative-ai-the-map-that-finally-makes-it-click.txt", "jsonld": "https://wpnews.pro/news/ai-vs-ml-vs-deep-learning-vs-generative-ai-the-map-that-finally-makes-it-click.jsonld"}}
