We're seeing a shift where "AI-powered" becomes the new "Pro" or "Ultra" tier. Instead of paying for tangible hardware upgrades, consumers are essentially subsidizing the massive R&D costs of generative AI and the specialized NPU (Neural Processing Unit) silicon required to run these models locally.
From a prompt engineering perspective, the real question is whether the on-device performance actually justifies the premium. Most of these "AI features" are still just wrappers for cloud-based API calls. If the heavy lifting is happening on a server, paying a $200 premium on the handset feels like a stretch. However, if we move toward a world of true local deployment where privacy is guaranteed and latency is zero, the value proposition changes. Until then, expect "AI" to be the primary lever companies use to maintain high margins as smartphone hardware hits a plateau.
