# AI storage squeeze lifts 30TB enterprise SSD to $22,600 while HDD capacity is booked years ahead

Enterprise storage buyers are facing a difficult trade-off: the cheaper medium is increasingly hard to reserve, while the faster one has become dramatically more expensive. VDURA’s latest Flash Volatility Index puts a 30TB TLC enterprise SSD at $22,600, compared with $1,216 for a same-capacity hard drive. That makes the flash drive 18.6 times more expensive on the index’s reference prices. The figures were published August 11 by VDURA, a storage vendor whose business promotes mixed SSD-and-HDD systems. Its index is therefore a vendor-produced reference, not an independent market benchmark. VDURA does not identify the individual manufacturers, distributors or contracts behind each price point. ## Flash prices have risen faster than disk

The August update says 30TB TLC enterprise SSD pricing rose 5% in July and reached approximately 6.5 times its third-quarter 2025 level, when VDURA recorded a price of $3,460. A 30TB QLC SSD was listed at $18,080, up from $2,768 over the same comparison period. The index placed a 30TB HDD at $1,216, versus $495 in the third quarter of 2025. The price gap has narrowed from a reported 23.2-times peak in the first quarter of 2026, largely because hard drives have also become more expensive. It remains well above the 7-times multiple recorded a year earlier, according to VDURA’s index. The broader NAND market is still moving higher. TrendForce forecast third-quarter 2026 NAND flash contract prices would increase 10% to 15% sequentially, while saying consumer demand was weakening as prices approached affordability limits. That forecast concerns contract pricing across the NAND market, rather than the retail or negotiated price of a specific 30TB enterprise drive. ## The cheaper tier is already being reserved

For AI infrastructure, the storage economics become significant at cluster scale. VDURA modeled a 25-petabyte system designed to deliver 1,000 gigabytes per second of sustained read performance. Its three-year estimate was $51.60 million for an all-flash design, compared with $12.86 million for a mixed architecture using 5.78 petabytes of flash and 22.68 petabytes of HDD capacity. The comparison is VDURA’s model, not a quoted system price from a hyperscaler, distributor or independent systems integrator. That mixed design depends on the availability of high-capacity nearline drives, and manufacturers say those drives are increasingly committed before production begins. Western Digital said during its fiscal-second-quarter earnings call that it was “pretty much sold out” for calendar 2026 and had firm purchase orders with its top seven customers. Western Digital’s latest fiscal-year results, released August 5, reported $3.75 billion in fourth-quarter revenue, up 44% from a year earlier. Its release did not say that every HDD model was unavailable to every buyer; the supply comments referred to production capacity and large enterprise customers. ## Seagate’s commitments extend further

Seagate has described a similar pattern. In its July 28 fiscal-fourth-quarter results, the company reported $3.6 billion in quarterly revenue. On the accompanying earnings call, Chief Executive Dave Mosley said the vast majority of Seagate’s nearline exabytes were allocated into calendar 2028 under long-term supply agreements. That language is more precise than saying every hard drive is sold out. Nearline capacity refers to high-capacity drives commonly used for data-center storage, and allocations can cover particular configurations, volumes and delivery periods. Consumer and smaller enterprise buyers may still find drives through distributors, but availability and pricing can differ from the manufacturers’ contracted enterprise business. Analyst checks point in the same direction. Morgan Stanley said in June that HDD demand was growing roughly 40% to 50% annually while supply growth was closer to 30% to 35%, with shortages potentially lasting through at least 2028. That is an analyst estimate, not a manufacturer forecast, and it does not establish the price paid by every buyer. ## Procurement is becoming part of system design

The result is a storage market where the conventional cost hierarchy has been disrupted. HDDs remain far cheaper per terabyte in VDURA’s model, but large customers that need guaranteed delivery may have to secure supply years ahead. SSDs provide the performance needed for training data, checkpoints and latency-sensitive inference, but current enterprise pricing can make an all-flash design substantially more expensive. The available evidence does not show that all AI data centers face an immediate storage shortage. It does show that the largest buyers are signing longer commitments while NAND and HDD prices remain elevated. For new projects, the choice between flash, disk and a mixed fleet now affects both the capital budget and the procurement schedule.
