AI makes pull requests less central in open-source contribution

AI is shifting open-source contribution away from pull requests toward issue-raising and direction-setting, according to a developer's observations. The pull request is losing its place as the unit of open-source contribution. For all the contributions that I am receiving on my projects and stuff I am raising in other repos, this is what I feel… AI can write most of the code a maintainer needs. What it cannot do on its own is decide what the project should become or confirm that one UX is better than another. Note: I am not talking about high-stakes, mission-critical projects; I am talking about utility software here. That is where the community’s role shifts. Instead of contributing code, the community’s job becomes shaping direction - what to build - what to fix - what is broken in practice. Issue raising also gets more valuable. A precise, well-reproduced bug report is worth more than ten AI-generated PRs nobody asked for : I believe every repo will have a software factory running behind it. The moment an issue or a PR is raised, execution kicks off the instant a human approves that it is ready to go. Every repo will have a strong set of guidelines for feature requests and bug reports, making the initial agentic assessment simpler.
