AI Impact A developer upgraded GitHub Stats with additional data sources and metrics to track AI impact, finding that indicators such as .ai TLD registrations, npm package installs, arxiv uploads, and CloudFlare bot traffic percentages show an uptick in the post-ChatGPT era. The project also notes declining metrics like StackOverflow questions, with the creator stating, 'The paperclips are getting louder.' TLDR: I upgraded Github Stats with more data sources and metrics, to see more of AI Impact. A while back I wanted to see if AI impact is visible just form github stats. So I made Github Stats https://vester.si/blog/github-stats . But I'm more curious than that, so I decided to see what other data exists to paint the picture. The requirements are that it's easy to get the numbers, they're first-hand numbers, and they seem to show an uptick in the current AI era call it post ChatGPT . I found several datasources, like the .ai tld, npm installs of certain packages, arxiv uploads, CloudFlare's stats on what % of global traffic is bots, data from the Beaureau of Labor Statistics, and I'm hoping to find even more know of some? let me know : . Would also be interesting to branch out from pure software areas into adjacent ones, like datacenter buildout, electrical grid impacts etc... but that's a bit more involved for now. I also thought there are numbers that are going up, but also ones that are going down, like StackOverflow questions famously gone , I think those are also important to include. After making these first few graphs, the feeling is what I've been saying tongue in cheek to friend for a while... The paperclips are getting louder.
