July 26, 2026, (Inside AI) — The global aerospace industry is confronting a critical talent shortage as artificial intelligence companies siphon off top engineering graduates, threatening a sector already grappling with a record order backlog and an aging workforce.
At the Farnborough International Airshow this week, 17-year-old student Hassan Butt embodied the passion the industry hopes to ignite. “Everyone when they're kids, they look up, they see the planes flying and they think, damn...” he said, aspiring to a career in aerospace with a focus on missiles. Yet industry leaders warn that enthusiasm alone cannot fill the gap.
The UK aerospace and defence sector faces an annual shortfall of roughly 10,000 specialized engineers, according to trade group ADS. A March report by the Royal Aeronautical Society revealed that over 50% of licensed aerospace engineers in Britain are older than 50, while fewer than 10% are under 30. The sector has expanded by 31% over the past decade, but the talent pipeline has not kept pace.
“We in the aerospace industry have been experiencing a shortage of skilled workers for some time ... despite the industry growing year on year for the past 10 years,” said Kevin Craven, chief executive of ADS. He pointed to innovations like flying taxis and sustainability as potential lures for younger engineers.
Competition from AI firms is intensifying. “If you’re an engineer coming out of Purdue or MIT or any other of the premier aerospace engineering programmes, you might say maybe I’ll go to Anthropic or OpenAI as opposed to Boeing or Airbus,” said Jerrold Lundquist, consultant and managing director of The Lundquist Group. This brain drain is compounded by higher salaries and lower barriers to entry in tech.
The talent crisis is not new. A Royal Aeronautical Society study has tracked declining apprenticeship participation for years. Many aerospace firms cut feeder apprenticeship programs during cost-saving drives, replacing them with short-term graduate schemes. These efforts, prominently displayed at Farnborough, struggle to rebuild long-term career pathways.
The UK government is betting that renewed defence spending, spurred by the war in Ukraine, will boost recruitment. Projects like BAE Systems’ Brontanax drone aim to modernize the sector’s image. ADS reported that aerospace, defence, and security contributed 46.8 billion pounds ($62.4 billion) to the UK economy last year, underscoring the stakes.
Yet young attendees like Molly Haydon, also 17, say outreach must extend beyond airshows. “I think they need to educate more young people on it and to get them more knowledge that there are still jobs available in the sector for everyone,” she said. Her call highlights a gender gap: women remain underrepresented in aerospace engineering, a challenge the industry has acknowledged but struggled to address.
Historical data from the ADS Group shows that while aerospace manufacturing output has surged, engineering enrollments have stagnated. The contrast with AI’s meteoric rise is stark: venture capital flooding into generative AI has created a magnet for STEM talent, leaving traditional sectors to fight for visibility.
Some companies are adapting with hands-on recruitment tactics. At Farnborough, engine-building exercises and Top Gun-style flying displays aimed to captivate Gen Z and Alpha. But experts question whether spectacle can outweigh the pull of Silicon Valley salaries and the allure of shaping transformative technology.
The backlog of aircraft orders—driven by Boeing and Airbus production struggles—adds urgency. Without a robust pipeline of engineers, delivery delays could worsen, impacting airlines and defence programs globally. The industry’s response will determine whether the next generation sees aerospace as a field of the past or a frontier of innovation.
