Drone attacks on cloud infrastructure signal a new era of conflict where data centers are as strategic as oil fields
Iranian drone strikes hit three Amazon Web Services data centers in the UAE and Bahrain starting March 1, 2026, causing structural damage and service disruptions in what marks the first confirmed deliberate targeting of commercial cloud infrastructure during an active military conflict.
Five attacks on Gulf data centers have now been confirmed since the conflict escalated. The strikes are widely interpreted as retaliation against perceived U.S. military and intelligence support routed through commercial tech infrastructure.
Alongside the physical strikes, Iranian authorities published a list of 29 technology targets spanning the Gulf and Israel. The list includes AWS, Microsoft, Google, Nvidia, Palantir, Oracle, and IBM.

Decentralized compute starts looking less theoretical #
Iran has developed a reported $3 billion Bitcoin economy, partly as a mechanism for navigating international sanctions. That context matters because it illustrates how crypto infrastructure and geopolitical conflict are already deeply intertwined.
Market observers note that the strikes have not yet produced a clear directional move in tokens associated with decentralized compute or storage projects.
What investors and operators should watch #
For publicly traded Bitcoin miners turned AI hosts, the immediate question is insurance and contract structure. Hut 8 and Core Scientific have made multi-billion-dollar commitments to physical facilities. Investors should be asking where those facilities are located, what force majeure provisions look like in their leases, and whether their hyperscaler customers carry the operational risk or pass it back to the host.
