What could once be characterized as a fairly non-antagonistic relationship between tech luminaries and the high-paid professionals laboring under their vision is no longer a given.A major rift is forming between tech employees and the executives running their companies, and it has a lot to do with AI regulation.
According to Wired, workers at OpenAI are now beefing with the AI lab’s co-founder and current president, Greg Brockman. At issue is Brockman’s highly controversial electioneering strategy: OpenAI-linked super PACs have spent
tens of millions of dollarson the 2026 US midterm elections, in an effort to boost candidates seen as friendly to the AI industry.
OpenAI’s rank and file, however, have a different agenda. In response to their company’s unprecedented electoral spending strategy, a group of tech workers have helped launch a competing super PAC, a group vying for strict regulations on companies like OpenAI.
The employee-linked PAC, called Guardrails Alliance, kicked off with $5 million in backing, with over $215,000 coming from OpenAI workers, Wired reported.
Juan Felipe Cerón Uribe, an OpenAI researcher who’s spent the last four years researching AI-linked social harm, told the publication “my decision to donate to them was easy.”
“In this time, I’ve become concerned that all that research will have gone to waste if it doesn’t translate to guardrails that hold private companies accountable for the responsible development of AI,” Uribe explained.
That news comes as other major tech corporations try to quash dissension in the ranks.
In Seattle, a group of Amazon workers filed a complaint alleging the company fired them in retaliation for their off-hours activism, which involved speaking out against an Amazon-linked data center at a city council meeting.
More recently, a group of 26 Meta employees filed a suit accusing the corporation of using an internal AI tool to select thousands of names for termination. In particular, the Meta staffers allege the company used internal attendance and job performance data to evaluate who to keep and who to cut — though the workers say the AI system used for this task failed to account for days missed due to things like maternity leave or medical emergencies.
