There's a new kind of thinker out there, and I'm sure you've bumped into a few. They arrive, thoughts formed and fully confident, with the vocabulary of a seasoned expert and the cadence of an accomplished author. Yes, they have the conclusions and the language. But what they don't have is the territory.
Call it the Uber of thought.
The analogy isn't perfect, but it does feel right for the times. The ride is real, and so is the destination. And the experience along the way, watching the terrain pass from the backseat, isn't nothing. It's real, but the exposure and navigation are different cognitive acts, and only one of them changes you.
The Role of Struggle in Developing Genius #
Genius, at its core, has always been understood as a trait. It's something you're born with, a raw capacity that sets certain minds apart. I think that part is probably true. But a trait is only the vehicle. What it becomes depends entirely on the roads it travels. Those cognitive bumps and bruises provide something beyond the static map. To me, that's not simply the price of insight. That's the mechanism of it.
The thinker who traverses that cognitive landscape arrives different than when they started. The difficulty wasn't incidental but intrinsic to the process. The confusion and the dead ends weren't obstacles to thinking, but were thinking itself. And what they left behind was a person with that cognitive geography internalized—not just the address memorized.
AI Optimization Changes the Thinking Process #
What AI changes is the mode of the journey and not the destination. The Uber, with the help of AI, optimizes the route and typically removes the friction. And here's where it becomes rather insidious: The joy is real. So the drift toward a passive journey isn't laziness or fraud. It's a rational response to a system that has made the ride genuinely better.
But the bruises were building something. Every wrong turn internalized the terrain in a way that the correct route never could. Arriving unscathed means arriving without having been marked by the difficulty. And remember, the mark is what the next journey depends on. When the road ahead has no Uber or optimized route, the passenger waits for a car that isn't coming.
Authentic Genius Relies on a Unique Cognitive Journey #
So the question the new genius may never answer is what the smooth arrival costs. The conclusions are there, and the destination was reached. But a destination you didn't navigate isn't quite yours. And when the same optimized route delivers thousands to the same conclusion, what looks like a generation of brilliant arrivals may be something closer to a monotonous fleet.
Individual genius was always unrepeatable. It was marked by the specific wrong turns of a unique mind. That wasn't a detour, it was the source. Optimize it away, and you get fluency without surprise and a passenger who mistakes the ride for the journey.
