When ChatGPT burst onto the scene, chatbots suddenly became the best thing since sliced bread, with everyone and their mother integrating a chatbot into their app. When OpenClaw followed, the conversation shifted to agents: personal assistants working in the background with minimal supervision. OpenClaw quickly faded from popular discourse, weighed down by security concerns and a steep barrier to entry, but agents continue to dominate the discussion. The possibilities are fascinating, and they've gotten much easier to use, with Muse being a case in point. Yet security issues continue to plague them — still looking at you, Muse.
Because of that, chatbots will likely remain the default way most people interact with AI for the foreseeable future. That doesn't have to mean giving up autonomy.
Always-on with just one prompt #
Real-time financial market data is where I've been thinking about this most. Claude and ChatGPT aren't what comes to mind when every second matters. You can't sit there re-prompting a chatbot every few seconds as the market moves. But it doesn't have to work that way.
Server-Sent Events (SSE) is a standard way to stream data over a persistent connection, and nothing inherently prevents a chatbot from opening one and becoming an always-on agent. At Flexreport Finance, we've built exactly this: from a single prompt in a Claude chat, Claude sets up a live market-data stream that feeds a real-time dashboard and keeps updating long after the conversation ends.
One prompt in Claude opens a live market-data stream into a real-time dashboard.
Two benefits #
It takes the burden of constant prompting off the user. You describe what you want to watch once. The dashboard keeps running, and you can go do other work and check back when it suits you.
It dramatically cuts token costs. Claude is given one, and only one, prompt, making the cost of watching the market all day the cost of a single prompt. Compare that with agentic workflows: when we ran Anthropic's equity agent on a single Lennar earnings update, it pulled 79.3k tokens of context over 21 minutes.
The upshot is that with the right infrastructure, a chatbot doesn't have to be a passive assistant waiting for your next message. It can set up autonomous work that keeps running, giving you both the simplicity of a conversation and the reach of an agent.
